Good book on the French Navy from the a Royal Navy prospective.

The author writes about being unbiased and gives us his biased opinion. To me, he writes like a victorious British author. As he writes about the French Navy. He does mention Admiral Suffren, but not as a top flight admiral, seems to me he pushes him into the "dust bin" of history. Although, Mr. Jenkins does think he was good, but not the best.

A Worthwhile Introduction

The principal merit of this book, published in 1972, is that it is still the only single-volume history of the French Navy in English. It is somewhere between a work of academic research and a popular history: it is apparently well researched but does not detail its sources and frequently expresses its author’s quite strong personal judgements on the personality and conduct of various naval officers that it describes.

After a short introductory chapter on the French Navy before Richelieu, the book concentrates on 17th and 18th centuries, with almost 200 pages (over half the book) on the period 1624 to 1789, about 80 pages on the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars and only 60 pages on the century and a half 1815 - 1972, including two World Wars. Although it could be argued that the French Navy was a more important instrument of national policy between 1690 and 1780 than at any later time, this focus probably reflects the author’s interest in the earlier period.

The author, E H Jenkins, was a junior naval officer in the First World War and later a history teacher who wrote it in his retirement. This may explain some of its features: its writing style is old fashioned, sometimes quaint, not surprising as it was written by someone born in 1897 when in their 70s. Its concentration on famous seamen and major battles rather than technology or political grand strategy seems more like 19th than 21st century historical writing.

However, these issues aside, the book does what it sets out to do well. It contains a readable and detailed (but not excessively detailed) account of the development of the French Navy in the early 17th century and its later use in France’s wars of aggressive expansion, with less emphasis on the post-1815 period when it was not used in this way. It gives this account from the French viewpoint, to balance the vast body of works centred on the British Navy. Although a small number of books have appeared in English since 1972 on aspects of the French Navy in the last 375 years, this is still the only one covering the whole period.

A great little book to remind us that being polite to our Spouse is always the right thing to do....for both of you.

A great little book of reminders in a world grown too busy to remember simple common curtsies of the older times when people treated one another well. There is something in this little book for EVERYONE...yourself included, lol... I hope you feel the same once you have a look.

Int was written 1oo years ago and terminology that is no longer used will amuse you at how they expresses themselves compared to how we might say the exact same things now. Interesting and beneficial to all..... Young couple just starting off or dating would do well to adopt some of these once common niceties and mannerly approach.

Be a Manly Man or a Womanly Woman and get the book.....then when you have finished it, share it with someone that could use a little polishing of the rougher edges.

Very practical guidance, even in today's world

I received this as a wedding gift and have been enjoying it ever since. While some of the advice is outdated, such as "don't serve your husband cold meat" I've found much of Blanche's advice to be very practical, especially in a new marriage. She encourages equality within the marriage, which I wasn't expecting, while still advocating for each spouse to love, encourage, and support the other one. A fun book to have in the house, for marriages new and old.

This is a great book to have on hand if your child is serious about violin playing. Making true music means interacting with other musicians and when you need to have a live piano accomplishment, this book is the perfect resource to give to your pianist. It has really propelled our son to become a serious violinist and the local piano teacher was glad we could offer the proper music for our son's violin lesson support.

Its hard, but worth the work when you accomplish to get it down

This book is much more difficult than the first three. What is especially hard is the bowing. This takes a lot of time, but if you want to make the pieces sound the way you know they should, you just have to keep working on it. It is fun to play the piece, but it does take much time, but worth it when you get it under your belt.

About the Author
James W. Kalat is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at North Carolina State University, where he taught courses in introduction to psychology and biological psychology from 1977 through 2012. He received an AB degree summa cum laude from Duke University and a PhD in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. He is also the author of INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY (10th Edition) and co-author with Michelle Shiota of EMOTION (2nd Edition). In addition to textbooks, he has written journal articles on taste-aversion learning, the teaching of psychology, and other topics. He was twice the program chair for the annual convention of the American Psychological Society, now named the Association for Psychological Science.

This is a terrific book by a terrific author.
i was just disappointed to have it delivered to myself when it was a gift and the person the gift was meant for, got the receipt.
One of the few occasions when Amazon stuffed up and it was difficult to register with Amazon the stuff up.
Not a disaster just a disappointment.
The book itself is the best of its kind.

Very interesting and easy to read text book. Not as mundane as most text books. It was required for my neurophysiological psychology class, which turned out to be one of my favorite classes ever only exacerbated by the ease of reading this book.

Satellite remote sensing and GIS were once the preserves of a small number of well-financed groups, but the field has been democratised by open-source software. QGIS and R are covered by this textbook aimed at a practitioners who want to know how to obtain, process and analyse remotely sensed data. It provides excellent guidance on designing studies and recognising both the potential and limitations of remotely sensed data. Later chapters cover common ecological applications, including distribution modelling and land cover pattern analysis. The book is printed in high quality with numerous colour figures. It would make an excellent companion to a workshop. -- Markus Eichhorn Frontiers of Biogeography The book has a clearly stated aim: "to make remote sensing data and tools more accessible to ecologists". The structure follows a logical and straightforward outline, which not only gives a comprehensive overview on the applications of remote sensing in ecology, but it proposes also an organized workflow useful not only for newcomers of RS & GIS. Each chapter adds a step in a realistic sequence often demanded by real case studies. I tested some of the proposed procedures with my collaborators and we found them quite effective and easily applicable in practice. We can then state that the authors met the declared aim. We appreciated the choice of open source software (OSS) declared in the book's subtitle. Basing the methodology on open source tools such as QGIS and R is a great advantage and it is coherent with the current era of free Earth Observation data. This gives the opportunity to approach ecological analyses at no cost avoiding the frustration of expensive commercial licenses that may quickly expire. Furthermore, the specific choice of QGIS and R as reference tools is justified by large and active communities, which can promptly assist users (especially newbies) on online forums, a great resource in alternative to usual help pages. In particular, the detailed and straightforward introduction to the R raster and remote sensing toolbox (RStoolbox) can be of great help. RStoolbox although with great capabilities and supported by a nice graphical potential, has a steep learning curve (as R in general) and was lacking of an easy introduction material with concrete examples. Therefore, readers that reach the end of the book following the exercises proposed will overcome most of the problems encountered in the learning phase of script writing. Moreover, many script samples are given directly on the book and more complex ones can be accessed online. This allows the creation of a nice library of example scripts that can be easily adapted to case to case analysis. One of the great advantages of using R and its scripts is the transparency and reproducibility of algorithms. This is the case for the examples provided for classification of land cover, for analysis of time series and land cover patterns and for species distribution modelling. Many tips and tricks are taught in the exercise proposed. They are useful to understand how the software work and how to be efficient while working with them. This is important especially when working with a large amount of raster in R or simply on a wide area of interest, such as for time series or land cover patterns analysis, which could require an amount of RAM memory or even disk space, exceeding the ones available. Martin Wegmann has a PhD in remote sensing focusing on time-series analysis on land cover change and fragmentation in Africa. Everything it was advertised to be, I just wish "Analysis and Mapping of Animal Movement in R" by Safi and Kranstauber was available. The last chapter was a little disappointing because it only discusses one type of movement modeling ("Lagrangian methods" - radio-tracking, satellite tracking, GPS, geolocators, and rings/bands). I was looking forward to the other set ("Eulerian methods"), but it looks like I'll just have to find what I'm looking for elsewhere since the book they reference to find information on these methods hasn't been published yet.

Great book

I cherish this book. The writing is very clear and there are abundant examples. I read this book cover-to-cover, which frankly isn't really possible for me to do with other technical books. That said, it is more of a cursory overview than an in-depth reference on most topics. If you are an incoming graduate student without much knowledge of GIS/spatial analysis/etc. and are facing a project that uses those tools, I think this book is an excellent buy. I already had exposure to R for spatial analyses and really wish I had this book when I was starting out. Covers a lot of the subject matter you will need to not feel overwhelmed in coursework.
