About the Author

Paola Sassi is�a practicing architect and partner of Sassi Chamberlain Architects and lecturer in design, technology and sustainability at the Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University.

Her�experience from two decades of architectural practice combined with�her knowledge of sustainable design, gained from independent research, an M.Sc. in Advanced Environment and Energy Studies (1995-1997) and sustainable building practice, has provided�her with�a broad overview of the issues of sustainability and an in-depth knowledge and experience of implementing the theory into practice.

As part of�her teaching activities, which include teaching environmental technologies and social and ecological sustainability, she has researched and compiled teaching material on a wide range of topics relating to sustainable architecture.�Her current research topics include environmental building performance assessments, sustainable building materials, waste minimisation, design for dismantling, reuse and recycling, and ethics of sustainability.

From psychology professor (Univ. of Washington) and marriage researcher Gottman: an upbeat, easy-to-follow manual based on research into the dynamics of married couples. Gottman describes his studies as being akin to a CAT scan of a living relationship and asserts that he's been able to predict the future of marriages with an accuracy rate of over 90 percent. In 1983 and 1986, his research team monitored more than a hundred married couples in Indiana and Illinois with electrodes, video cameras, and microphones as they attempted to work out real conflicts. Using the information derived from these sessions, Gottman concludes here that a lasting relationship results from a couple's ability to resolve conflicts through any of the three styles of problem-solving that are found in healthy marriages- -validating, conflict-avoiding, and volatile. Numerous self-quizzes help couples determine the style that best suits them. Gottman points out, however, that couples whose interactions are marked by four characteristics--criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and withdrawal--are in trouble, and he includes self-tests for diagnosing these destructive tactics, as well as steps for countering them. Interestingly, Gottman asserts that the basis of a stable marriage can be expressed mathematically: the ratio of positive to negative moments must be at least 5:1--and he offers a four-step program for breaking through negativity and allowing one's natural communication and problem-solving abilities to flourish. Not as well written as the companion book by the author

This book is very similar to "The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work : A Practical Guide from the Country's Foremost Relationship Expert". It almost seems like a first draft of the other book. Not as well organized or clearly written. It is a very good book, but I would recommend "The Seven Principles" over this one.

A must read for married couples!!!

I read this book on the advice of my marriage therapist, right after my divorce was final. No advice has ever rung so true. It was a little too late to fix that one, but it's given me a lot to practice for the future. Of course, no book can answer all the questions, solve all your problems, but if you want to understand some of the more intricate patterns of communication that can subtly erode your marriage, I think this book is exceptional. I recently read it again with my partner, and it drew us together, helped us understand the goings on of our communication, where each of us has difficulty, and gave us sensible, reasonable solutions to mend our relationship and make it more positive. The best part of all: neither of us felt horrible for behaving like children; it just helped us understand what the consequences of our actions might be.
One little bit of data he uncovered, the impact of positive to negative interactions between couples, was reduced to a rather mathematical forumula: to practice a ratio of five positive to every one negative interaction. Sounds scientific enough, but in practice it's remarkable how much that little habit has done to improve all of my relationships. I think Gottman's work is a significant contribution to understanding how marriages do work, and what couples can do to avoid the pitfalls of harmful communication patterns. I have recommended it to everyone I know whose relationships are ailing and have gotten a lot of grateful thanks from them.
He's got a great writing style, humorous at times, and the book is fun to read with your significant other. I feel his information is practical, authentic, and gives the people like me, who don't quite understand all the ins and outs of communication, hope to have a better relationship.

This book was required reading in my clinical psychology, masters level course. I was surprised to see a "popular psych" book in a graduate course but it turned out to be a great text. This book combines an academic and research perspective with accessible and easily generalized examples that can benefit anyone. Since reading it, I have significantly improved my relationship skills and use them frequently in my marriage. The self-tests, the simple practices, and the engaging writing style place this book at the top of the stack for relationship advice. This book is not just for couples in trouble--new couples or anyone looking to improve their relationship skills can benefit. I give it as a wedding gift all the time.

What do you get with secrets, infidelity, suicide attempts, divorce, and custody battles? A humorous novella written by Thomas Chimera. This entertaining book proves that when life hands you lemons, you can definitely make lemonade with the right determination, and of course a great sense of humor. I look forward to reading more..., keep them coming.

Couldn't put it down for a second

I was kind of strong armed by a co-worker who knows the author into reading "My Dad the Little League Coach" and all I can is wow! By the first page on through to the very last paragraph I really and truly couldn't put this little book down. While the author may not rival the prose of Proust he is indeed the rarest of wordsmith's who tells a sometimes tragic story in a way that lifts the soul and makes you actually laugh completely and unabashedly outloud. If you think this is a story about baseball you'd be way off track. This is a comedic work of art wrapped around doing the right thing in less than perfect ways.

I was fortunate enough to be on the initial review team for "My Dad the Little League Coach" so I hope my thoughts are not at all biased. Of the twenty-two books I've reviewed this year alone, never have I come across a more gifted and brilliant story teller than Chimera. If ever there could be a sequel to Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye" with all the twists and turns of a David Lynch film, this is it.

About the Author
Steven J. Zaloga was born in 1952, received his BA in history from Union College, and his MA from Columbia University. Excellent and informative book on an important Soviet AFV

Steven Zaloga is one of my favorite authors on tanks and AFVs. This volume does not disappoint. The T54/55 tank is one of the most numerous and successful Soviet tanks ever developed. Over 40,000 of these tanks are used all over the world. Zaloga does a great job of describing the development of the T54 and T55 tanks and the variant models. He also includes various sections which explain the upgrade versions of the T55, the Chinese copies of the T54 (called the T-59 and T-69), and the combat performance of the T54/55. What I always appreciate about Zaloga is that he inserts helpful information such as the armor penetration of the 100mm D-10T guns (e.g. compare the HVAP round which penetrates 200mm with the latest UBM6 APSDS round which can penetrate up to 290 mm at 2km against a vertical target)and the armor upgrades of the T55. As always in this series, the colored plates and illustrations are excellent. Zaloga packs in so much information in 47 pages! Highly recommended!!

Infamous T-55

Author Steve Zaloga is probably the best expert on Soviet equipment. This book is an update to the earlier Vanguard Soviet Modern tanks published back in 1984. Ironic that the older book has more photos (two) of the interior than this book (one). If you've studied modern armor or warfare, then you know of the T-55. It traces its lineage from the T-34 of WW2 fame, continuing the Russian concept of small, easily built tanks that are highly mobile and simple to use. The down side is that they are lighter, less protected and not comfortable for their crews.

This is an excellent primer on the T-55, perhaps the best of what is available right now. The photos tend to be small, but crisp B&W. There are six pages of color plates to show the paint schemes and two pages for a vehicle cut away. The one comment I have on these New Vanguard series - not enough coverage on the interior. I think each crew position should be shown, hence only four stars. Balancing that out is very good narrative and overview of the tanks's history and use in combat. Recommended for all armor buffs & modelers.

A decent general overview of the most important variants of T-54/T-55 series

The book is a very succinct overview of the most important variants of the T-54/55 tank series. The best part of the book are details regarding Russian and Chinese development of the different versions of the tank. However, the work is by no means an exhaustive treatment of the topic - the book is simply way too short to cover the full spectrum of variants, visual images and technical details regarding the most widely used tank of post-World War II era. If you want a short introduction and basic facts, this is a work for you, but for information and images of a particular version of the tank one might have to look for other sources.

Better than school. Reuben Advani, please write more books!

As an MIT student, I find Reuben's book more enlightening than most of my professors.

I'm not even halfway through my Kindle version of this book, and I'm picking up my Macbook Air to pen this review. This book deserves more stars!! Every undergrad or MBA student, professional, anyone seeking an insider's guide to modern finance must buy this book. It'll even help decipher newspaper jargon of off-balance sheet transactions, special purpose entity (SPEs). It even highlights what ratios / which financial statements / how major corporations today cook the books.

I wish my professors would use anecdotes like Reuben's, because a reader will actually *remember* them unlike most other books. Example:

"I like to think of the income statement as the report card for the company... However, in the world of finance, it's the student and not the teacher issuing the grade... Companies an highlight certain items with the hopes that Wall Street and the investor public will look favorably upon the company based on this emphasis. Simply stated, the problems include the following:
- Revenues do not accurately reflect what the company has collected.
- Expenses do not accurately reflect the cash that was paid. ...

Great read...

Whether you have a background in Finance or not you will benefit from the way Reuben presents relatively complex financial analysis concepts in an easy to follow manner. Most Finance textbooks are a snore-fest filled with theory that will put insomniacs to sleep. Reuben has taken those theories and presented them in such a way that is jovial and lighthearted. The structure of this book is genius; examples are utilized in a manner that is actually applicable to the "real world". Novel idea!

All MBA students should be required to read this book prior to showing up for day 1 of class.

About the Author
Timothy Zahn is the author of more than forty novels, nearly ninety short stories and novellas, and four short-fiction collections. In 1984, he won the Hugo Award for Best Novella. Zahn is best known for his Star Wars novels (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command, Specter of the Past, Vision of the Future, Survivor’s Quest, Outbound Flight, Allegiance, Choices of One, and Scoundrels), with more than four million copies of his books in print. Other books include the Cobra series, the Quadrail series, and the young adult Dragonback series. Zahn has a B.S. in physics from Michigan State University and an M.S. from the University of Illinois. He lives with his family on the Oregon coast.

Only been waiting years for this book

The down side of the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm was that books like Timothy Zahn's the Thrawn Trilogy were relegated to a status dubbed "Legends." And while some of the new material has been enjoyable (notably James Luceno' s "Catalyst") mostly the books have been middling-quality afterthought to the new films and cartoons.

"Thrawn" rectifies that.

From a only-barely modified origin story that will be very familiar to those who read the short "Mist Encounter" to bringing Thrawn days before his debut in "Rebels", we see the journey an alien has to take to rise to the pinnacle of military rank in the xenophobic Empire. There are familiar notes including character and ship names readers of Zahn's Legends material, new material including Thrawn's young protege, and for those who require an Imperial villain, we have Arhinda Pryce and her ruthless climb to political power that also explains a great deal about her character on Rebels and how she and Thrawn became allies of a sort. There's also a surprise twist to Thrawn's backstory that should catch even longtime readers off guard. And for the first time ever, we're permitted a glimpse into Thrawn's mind rather than seeing him filtered through a human POV.
New-canon only fans may find things like the explanation of the "civilian casualties" on Batonn strange or not in keeping with the so-far almost simple-minded insistence in new canon on black and white morality, but readers familiar with Zahn's work recognize this is a design feature, not a bug. If the book had any real flaws, it was a somewhat underwhelming antagonist in "Nightswan", and some of the battle sequences get VERY long-winded as Eli (the narrator) talks through analyzing them. But overall the book is the high quality and characterization we have come to expect from Zahn. Other than Catalyst this is, thus far the only must read new Star Wars thus far, and the only one which is a must read for its own sake.

I miss the Thrawn trilogy, but this one is a great entry

I am not going to lie. Anyone who knows me in real life, knows I am a huge Star Wars nerd- movies, comics, expanded universe, etc. When Disney ended the first expanded universe, I was actually upset as a few of my favorite characters were now gone from the Star Wars Universe with Thrawn being one of those characters. I loved the Thrawn trilogy and those books were usually the ones I would recommend to people if they wanted to jump into the EU of Star Wars.

When I heard Thrawn was coming back, but was going to the Rebels universe, I got a little nervous. Rebels is a great show, but it is geared toward younger fans. Disney's first few books from the Rebels universe were ok, but also geared toward a younger audience. Was Thrawn by Timothy Zahn, the guy who created the character, going to be on the same path? The good news is no. Thrawn wasn't Disney-fied at all! In fact, it might be one of the better Thrawn books.

As can be expected, this is a prequel for Rebels and an origin story of how Thrawn rose through the ranks of the Imperial Empire. It is also the origin story of Arihnda Pryce of Rebels fame. The book also introduces Eli Vanto, who is Thrawn's translator, but really first in command and confident as time moves on. We do not get scenes of Thrawn's past, but simply how he entered into the Empire to fight the rebels.

The main story, besides the origin stuff, is how Thrawn chases a top notch smuggler for most of his career until the final conflict between the two. It is also the story of Pryce as she seeks revenge against her former boss when she is dismissed. It is a world of politics, warfare, and what tactics and leadership look like.

Let me start with the negative. There are long stretches of this book that are political dialog. Part of Thrawn's difficulty in rising through the ranks is the Empire is notorious for disliking aliens in favor of humans, so people look to undermine him politically. Thrawn also seems to not understand the political system of the Empire, so he must learn to navigate those waters. Prepare to read a lot of politics.

The great part is the character of Thrawn is back and just as good as before. What makes his character unique, for those who do not know him, is he studies art and people's faces and mannerisms to figure out what type of character people have. He is all strategy in his thinking, but as stated, it comes from his study of art. He is a thinker and not just an actor. He is not the shoot 'em up type, but rather how does one get out of situations using one's mind and resorting to guns only when needed. It is a breath of fresh air in the Star Wars lightsaber or pistol world.

The other fun is you are rooting for the Empire, if you root for Thrawn. He is fighting the Rebel Alliance and is trying to destroy it, which the reader forgets. He is on the Emperor's side and not Luke Skywalker's. So, he is an incredible anti hero.

While I wouldn't recommend this one to new fans jumping into the EU, I would recommend it to longer fans or fans who know the movies/EU pretty well. There isn't much exposition as to who some of the characters are as you are just supposed to know them. It is a fun book for Thrawn fans and people who want to get to know this character.

I gave it 4 stars, but that is weighted as I am a fanboy.

The introduction of Thrawn

Zahn had a challenge before him - how to take a character he had already created and fit him into a new version of Star Wars. In my opinion, he was more than up to the task.

He weaves a tale of Thrawn's discovery by and subsequent induction into and rise in what I still call the Imperial Fleet, a rise that does not endear him to the politically-driven ranks of the officer corps. He is too good at his job, too effective at getting results - and too alien in a human-dominated environment.

Parallel to his tale is the tale of Arihnda Pryce, as she struggles to rise from the position of, to use chess terminology, pawn to queen.

It's interesting that Zahn brings in the tale of what I saw as a background character in "Star Wars Rebels" and fleshes out a...not quite a relationship, but an alliance between these two, Thrawn rising in the Fleet and Pryce rising in the halls of power. It really sets the stage for much of what we see on the Imperial side of season three in "Rebels".

More surprisingly, it lends some humanity to Imperial forces. I felt an appreciation for them I'm not sure I have ever felt, coming away with the sense that, after the chaos of the Clone Wars, many feel the Empire to be a better government than a Republic, albeit one in need of tempering its excesses.

The Thrawn here is still much the same Thrawn we were introduced to in the "Heir to the Empire" trilogy, foresightful and shrewd and almost-psychic in some of his insights. Yet there is one piece of Thrawn's background that is tweaked, and in the end this tweaking offers entirely new possibilities for the future of "Star Wars".

It's a very good link to his role in "Rebels", but ends up also offering insight into why rebellion begins in the first place, and hints at a very different course for the future than the original EU.

I don't think fans of Thrawn will be disappointed. Those who aren't really Thrawn fans may still find a good read.
