About the Author

James Reinders, Chief Evangelist of Intel Software Products, is a senior engineer who joined Intel Corporation in 1989 and has contributed to a number of projects, including the world's first TeraFLOP supercomputer (ASCI Red), compilers and architecture work for the iWarp, Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Itanium, and Pentium 4 processors. He has years of experience in processor architecture, optimizing compilers, parallel computer architecture, and making products for software developers.

Opens up your thinking about parallelism

I agree with Hardman's review as far as it goes -- the book cannot go into as much detail as he would like since it is designed to be cross platform (and surprisingly also applicable to other similar chips e.g., AMD).

On the other hand, this book opens you up to an important area: how can you use a small number of cores to speed up your program, including those programs that appear serial at first (and maybe second) glance e.g., the cumulative sum of a vector.

The book has a lot of depth on the algorithms used and works through applications of differing complexity and varied domains.

As an extra bonus it provides annotated pointers to its intellectual predecessors, albeit not as extensive as Hillis' book.The Connection Machine (Artificial Intelligence)

Potentially useful technology, book could be better

There are many views of how best to implement multi-threading and with multi-core processors now common the topic is becoming ever more relevant. Of course the best implementation method really depends on what you are trying to do. Are you implementing something that waits for a price update message from a derivatives exchange, parses the message, updates cached data, writes a log and forwards the message on to an algorithmic trading engine? If so, you'll probably be attracted to techniques different from someone calculating risk, bond prices etc. There is no one technique that suits every job.

Anyone working with multi-threading (and parallelism in general) keeps an eye on what techniques other people are using to see whether they may be useful. That's why I bought this book (Intel Threading Building Blocks) and TBB certainly looks like it will be of use for some multi-threaded applications that I develop, although not for all.

Starting with the most important question - have I learnt anything from reading this book. Yes, and I've learnt a couple of bits from reading the TBB source code too (downloadable from the web). Now for the detail...

Having read the book, am I now about to start using the Intel Threading Building Blocks library (downloadable from Intel)? The answer is yes, for some applications on some hardware architectures, but not for all of my multi-threaded applications. Importantly in terms of this book though, the first reason I looked at the TBB source code was to answer questions raised when reading the book, and that is my main issue with this book. For a developer who already has extensive multi-threading experience, this book raises quite a few questions that it doesn't answer.

Even some of the things that this book does answer are tucked away in the text a long way into the book. Here are three examples:
(1) The book tells you to create tasks, not explicitly work with threads. Where is the best description of a task? Page 267. It's not even in a glossary, but tucked away in the examples chapter. Somewhere in the first chapter would have been more useful.
(2) Personally, if I am told within the first few pages that TBB is based on the idea of developers implementing their systems as small tasks that are scheduled by the TBB scheduler I am immediately going to ask how that task is handled at a technical level. Ok, we're told quickly that it's written as a functor, and that functors may be executed on different cores, but does that mean that a thread is chosen from a thread pool to execute each functor, that (on Windows) fibers are used, that there is one manager thread running per core (with processor affinity set?) with each manager pulling tasks from its own queue, what are the performance implications of context switching and locking, etc? The author may think that the reader doesn't need this level of detail, but if somebody is going to the trouble of writing multithreaded code to improve performance I would think it very likely that they will want to know what is happening beneath the surface to ensure that they are using the best techniques. Some details of the scheduler are provided much further into the book (for instance we discover that last-in, first-out deques are used), but not enough and far too late.
(3) On page 133 there are two paragraphs discussing when task-based programming is inappropriate, a bit late in my opinion for those people for whom it does turn out to be inappropriate.

I also have issues with some of the things presented as absolute fact in the book. For example "Race conditions are less catastrophic than deadlocks". I disagree. With a deadlock your program stops, you know about it very quickly, you investigate and you sort it out. If it happens, it'll probably only happen once. With a race condition you may not even realise it exists, the application produces subtly incorrect results and hence your functionality goes awry. If that means your algorithmic trading engine decides to buy a million shares instead of doing nothing (or selling) then you are going to lose a lot of money very quickly. Possibly not just once, but day after day until you realise the race condition is there.

Then there are the bits that are just plain confusing. Here are two examples:
(a) We are told on page 271 that Task stealing is "Terrible" and "will disrupt cached data", but are told on page 283 that TBB is "unique because it rests on a few key decisions" including "Use task stealing". Hmmm...
(b) The code comment on page 231, "2 = 1 for SideShow and C". I know what it means, but adding a verb phrase would prevent the moment when the reader wonders just which proof is about to be presented that "2 = 1".

On the plus side, the book does discuss the split/join pattern, pipelines, atomic operations, benefits of working in user space, issues with the standard new operator (and hence libraries that make use of it), caching issues etc. There is also a chapter on general "Keys to Success" which is useful. There are also some reasonable examples towards the end of the book (although some half way through would be better replaced - demonstrating a point is one thing, but demonstrating it with realistic code is better).

Possibly outside the intended scope of the book, it might have been useful to briefly describe grid computing and whether Intel have plans to add a layer above TBB for use across grids instead of just on one machine, or whether Intel's plans for grid computing simply rely on a completely different model.

So to summarise, the TBB library from Intel looks like it could be very useful, this book will certainly get you started using it, but have no doubt that this book could have been better. Buy it if you will be using TBB, but until somebody writes a better book be prepared to read the TBB source code to find the answers to your deeper questions, or simply ask questions on Intel's web-site.

Complementary Manual of Intel's TBB documents

I think, this book is the complementary manual of Intel's TBB documents.
Because Intel provides some documents (tutorial, getting started, reference, design pattern) and example codes in the TBB package, but it could be somewhat difficult to find the sample code for all of TBB features like concurrent_*(queue, hash_map, vector) or TBB's task modules.

Although it proposes a good philosophy of concurrency but lacks concepts or diagrams to explain its codes parts.

A good example book.

You need to get this book!

I just finished reading NOT IN MY HOUSE! by Pastor Andre Butler. It didn't take me long to complete this book. This book shares strategies to help you get out of debt God's way. If you are not a tither, you might want to start. In today's economy, you especially need something bigger than yourself. This book gives you a game plan for getting out of debt. It also brings to light how we have been sold a bill of goods when it comes to debt. Debt is not God's best and we need to stop acting like it is. A lot of people are saving up to pay for cars in cash to avoid all of the interest charges. I stopped buying furniture on credit years ago because it was just a ripoff. The book also talks about getting a 15 year mortgage as opposed to a 30 year mortgage. I am amazed at everytime I get a statement how I am literally still paying interest and will likely continue to pay interest for another 10 to 15 years on a 30 year mortgage loan unless something drastically changes. I plan to pay my car note off this year and after that I want to buy cars in cash.

It is time to stop giving our money away and take back the things that God's wants us to have. NOT IN MY HOUSE! shows you how to recession proof your home. You need to get this book and buy it for others as well.

This book is inspiring! Not only does Andre Butler provide a glimmer of hope during these uncertain economic times, but he also gives practical tactics for survival! Butler first pinpoints the reader at where he or she may be financially, and then takes the reader step by step to bring them from being recession-threatened to recession-proof! The 28-Day Challenge that goes along with the book is such a help to put these action steps into practice, but it is easy enough that you can do it consistently. NOT ABOUT INSIGHTS TO THE PORN INDUSTRY. IT'S ABOUT HER LIST OF GRIEVANCES WITH HER FAMILY.

The book is heavily misrepresenting itself in several ways. For example only about 20% of the book has anything to do with the adult industry. By far the majority deals with the author's messed up personal relationships. Another example is that many of the facts are misrepresented either for effect or just to make a better story leading you into getting a distorted view. An example of this would be in the dialogue where the author would say that her mamma would say, "Christy, you get in here right now." Well her name is Melissa Kaye Bardizbanian so it is not very likely that her mother would be calling her Christy unless you believe her parents were clairvoyant and would know that was going to be her stage name in about 15 years. There are many other examples. Her time frames on things are also all out of synch with reality. As far as Melissa's writing ability, she has very big fluffy breasts on a thin frame which is quite attractive, but words are definitely not her thing. Overall, she is not a very nice person as can be seen by the fact that she goes on and on and on about how people hurt her or let her down over and over again. Well a non-narcissistic person would eventually ponder, "Maybe my behavior is contributing to the way people are treating me". Not this author. It is always other people's fault. It really gets tiring to read her lists of grievances. Finally, she doesn't blow the lid off any celebrities that you every heard about, and since there is so much else about the book that is either totally inaccurate or is playing to the grandstands, you have to have your doubts about these revelations. It got two stars, instead of one because there was a little bit about the porn industry that I know was accurate.

A Satisfying Look at Pornography

Christy Canyon has written a very interesting book about her career in pornography. The words feel like the truth. You won't be seduced into believing this is a great career move and you won't be fooled into thinking that Ms. Canyon is the woman you want to take home to meet the folks. She is neither a victim nor a proponent.

I have read other insider books (e.g. Jerry Butler) and outsider books (e.g. Luke Ford) and sexpert books (e.g. Susie Bright, Carol Queen) and saw Boogie Nights but this book was the most satisfying in terms of my curiousity of what it is like to work in XXX. I recommend this book for those who are similarly curious. Those looking for a simple turn on will be disappointed.

Some have criticized this book for an excess of typos. One that I spotted was "striper" instead of "stripper". Well, a spell-checker program would miss that one also. But I have read technical books with more typos than this one. More distracting was the sloppy page layout. I suspect the phrase "orphan management" refers only to the musical Annie as far as this book's producer is concerned. The book would also be better with some pictures - even simple black and white photographs showing Christy Canyon in a pose not intended for a video cassette box.

Fantastic book by and about a fascinating lady

Whether friend, fan or curious stranger, read this! "Lights, Camera, Sex!" is a must for any fan of the legendary Christy Canyon, considered by those who know and care as one of the greatest adult stars of the twentieth century, if not the greatest. But it's more. It is an always interesting story of the adult video industry by a lady who not only survived but thrived. She intersperses industry behind the scenes stories with insights to the life and times of an intelligent and witty "valley girl" and the people and experiences that shaped her.

This book may be disappointing to those who like their adult stars stereotypically stupid sluts. But like other successful and enduring performers, Christy does not fit that clich�d pigeonhole. Ms. Canyon self-published this autobiography. If a mainline publishing house distributed her work and marketed it as a roman a clef by an exciting new author, people who never heard of Christy would have made this the best seller it deserves to be. Canyon refused to compromise, refused censorship, and succeeded her way.

The author, encouraged by her creative writing instructor, has written a lively narrative that will make you laugh and make you cry, while providing introspective on a remarkable life in an entertaining business. Her attention to detail, descriptive prose, prodigious memory, and well-researched vignettes coupled with fascinating flashbacks of the author's formative years make this much more compelling than just another star's life. It follows the author's brief but productive early career, her surprise departure from the adult business, and her first comeback. The author promises a follow-up about her life on the road dancing, but this deserves more than just one sequel. We look forward not only to her continuing story, but some advice books, some comedy, some romance novels and perhaps a screenplay. Turn on the reading lights, put down the camera, and focus on "Lights, Camera, Sex!"

About the Author
Norma Chikiamco wrote for various newspapers and magazines before shifting to writing short stories for children. A journalism graduate of St. Theresa's College in the Philippines, she has studied at the International Institute for Journalism in Berlin, Syracuse University in New York, and the Culinary Institute of America. Aside from winning first prize in the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, she has also been given the Outstanding Journalism Award by the Australian-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce and the National Book Award by the Manila Critics' Circle for a cookbook she edited. She has also written a series of cookbooks for Periplus Editions in Singapore.

Illustrator
Mark Ramsel N. Salvatus III hails from Quezon province in the Philippines. He graduated cum laude from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila with a degree in fine arts, major in advertising. He has won several national competitions in the Philippines, including ArtPetron.

I didn't think she could, but she did

I'm 40 years old and I loved this book. I was also surprised that my daughter kept asking me to read it night after night. The moral of the story is that we are each special and that being unique always comes in handy. Being ashamed about what makes us different won't help anyone.

All this disguised behind a lovely and totally relatable storyline.

Sure, it's neat to know which famous people have the same birthday you do, but wouldn't it be fascinating to know what else you have in common with these celebrities? The Secret Language of Birthdays will show you this and much more. Through "personology" (a combination of characteristics influenced by sun sign, season, and day of the year) and an analysis of several thousand character profiles, authors Gary Goldschneider and Joost Elfers have pinned down the traits most common to people born on the same day.

Rather than taking a strictly astrological approach--how the planets, sun, and stars affect a person's behavior--the authors compare the commonalties of people who share birthdays, and piece together a personality for each day of the year, effectively slicing through geographical and cultural differences, while avoiding the one-size-fits-all trap of newspaper sun-sign horoscopes. Some readers may find the authors' strict use of the Gregorian calendar limiting, but conversion to other time-keeping systems is fairly simple (the authors make note of this problem and contend that a day is a day, whether someone names it October 21 or 1 Rajab). Goldschneider and Elfers focus on a model of the year as a wheel spinning in a recurring circle of patterns, an idea that reaches back far beyond the linear calendars we use today. Take a little astrology, mix it with some tarot and some numerology, add a dash of psychology, frost with your birthday, and you've got "personology." For those who don't believe in astrology, the tarot, or numerology, this premise is certain to sound like hokum. But surprisingly, Goldschneider's assessments of personality on the basis of one's birthday seem fairly accurate--at least in this reviewer's smallish survey. The author's theory is that because all of life is cyclical, people born on the same day occupy the same point in the year's cycle and thus share characteristics. Even total nonbelievers will find this big, attractive book fun to read. Each day gets a double-page spread with a personality description, health information, and the date's relation to astrology signs and the tarot. There are also long lists of people born on each day, though here's where personology gives pause. Can March 10's Harriet Tubman and Chuck Norris really have all that much in common? Ilene Cooper

About the Author
Gary Goldschneider began his study of human personality with an interest in biographies and psychoanalytic theory. Before deciding against a career in medicine, for three years he attended Yale Medical School, where he studied psychiatry. During this time he discovered his deep and abiding interest in astrology and its symbolic relationship to personality.

Joost Elffers was born in Amsterdam. He created and produced numerous books over the past twenty years, including Play With Your Food and The 48 Laws of Power. He lives in New York.

ESPecially for people who want to know themselves and others

I really have no idea who Gary Goldschneider and Joost Elffers are, but somehow, they've managed to find out every little thng about every person I know and placed that information on the pages of this book.

Whenever people come over and want to get a quick thumbnail sketch about someone, they just find that person's birthday and turn to the corresponding page. There, in a concise but surprisingly in-depth essay, is a bit about the standards and practices of whatever birthdate you're looking at! Included are celebrities who were also born on that day throughout history and a few other interesting tid bits.

It makes for a fascinating party game, to find out just how "true" you think these comments are for you. So far, everyone I know has said they've been nailed to a tee by this book. I ask you... can everyone be wrong?

Highly recommended (for entertainment purposes only).

"Scary" seems to be a good term...

I'm not big on horoscopes, and hold a long-held belief that horoscopes are self-fulfilling once you read them. If you are looking for a "major romantic disaster" you will find one...whether or not you would normally classify it as major... but I'm digressing a tad.

I glanced through this book, looking up my birthday. AHH! Howly cow (and stronger, sensored words)! It pegged me perfectly. Even down to my chosen profession as an applied pedgagogical specialist dealing with underdeveloped, high-spirited, curious young people (I'm a teacher). Seesh.

This book, while it hasn't convinced me that astology and birthday personalities exists per se...has thoroughly convinced me that I'm being followed and closely watched by someone. Or that there is some truth in this "horoscopic" idea that has lasted for thousands of year.

READ THIS BOOK! Even us skeptics need to get something tossed into our faces once and awhile.

Too Much Fun ... Even For a Skeptic

I am too much of a skeptic to believe in astrology, but despite that I found THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF BIRTHDAYS to be a fun read that provides literally years worth of entertainment.

What intrigued me most about this dictionary-sized book is that instead of dividing mankind into 12 groups based upon astrological signs, THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF BIRTHDAYS devotes a two page spread to those born on each of the 365 days of the year and February 29th, too.

To some this may not seem interesting, but having grown up in a large family of six kids -- five of whom are Aquariuses -- I could never relate to astrology because none of my brothers and sisters has anything in common, yet we are all left to read the same paragraph in the newspaper horoscope.

There are three reasons you may want to check out the SECRET LANGUAGE OF BIRTHDYAS either for yourself or as a gift for a friend:

1. In many cases, if you look up your birthday, you will be shocked to find how accurately a complete stranger describes you. In my case, and in the case of many people I know, this book described us to a tee, including the good, the bad and the ugly;

2. When having friends over, this book can be enormously entertaining. Old, young, fat, thin, black, white, Puerto Rican, everyone loves to read about him or herself. Hearing these birthday-related personality profiles has provided hours of conversation as my friends and I debate whether we are accurately described in this book. Most people agree they are. Even funnier is looking up the birthdays of famous people. It is truly shocking what you will find here. Reading about Bill Clinton's and Monica Lewinsky's birthdays will amaze you because in both cases the profiles were written before the scandal; and finally

3. When giving a birthday present to someone, I like to Xerox his or her two page spread and make it into a card. I have found that often they like it more than the gift itself.

Polynesian Heritage

I bought this book because I have always been interested in the culture of Polynesia, being born in the region myself. The book is a fantastic glimpse into the British colonial mind set in the late 1800's, as the book features heavy dialogue of terms and language used then...but not so much used now.

For the price, it's a good read if you like to enjoy reading older literature or want an older view on Polynesian culture from the British point of view. The pictures drawn then still have meaning now, as they are examples of a culture nearly pushed to extinction.

However, the culture still exists when the British Empire does not. It's definitely worth a look at, or rather a reading into.

Really Terrific -- Sticklers Should Read This

This is an illuminating survey of language change, looking at how languages change and whether or not this is the "bad thing" that so many believe it to be. It spends a lot of time looking at current examples of change (mostly in American and British English, but also in other languages) which I at least find far more interesting than the usual focus on past changes. As to why languages change, the author has no firm answers, but who does? This book helped me in my intellectual progress from a stance that says "good English is under attack" to one that says "language is a living thing". Written at a fairly simple level, but the information is useful even to experienced students

While it's title might make the book seem a collection of papers taking sides in a debate, LANGUAGE CHANGE: Progress or Decay is a textbook written by Jean Aitchison introducing contemporary study of language change to beginning students of linguistics. The book has proven quite popular for its gentle tone and its clear summarization of important work in the field, and is now in its third edition.

This reviewer is a graduate student of historical linguistics, and I've several years of experience in the field. For all its simplicity, however, Aitchison's book was relevatory. Those with training in the Indo-European or Uralic language families tend to think of language change as some abstract sequence of events that are cleanly reconstructed with the comparitive method. Our traditional handbooks are rather divorced from contemporary research and don't consider the "why" and "how" of language change. Aitchison remedies this by considering language as a product of human beings, with all of their social pressures and insecurities. She first presents the work of William Labov, who viewed language change in progress in 20th-century new York. His work tells us about how varying standards of pronunciation in a given population spread or die depending on social prestige.

Another matter this student of historical linguistics was unclear about is exactly why sounds tend to change along the same lines in all language families. Everyone knows that final consonants tend to be lost, labiovelars stops may become /p/ or /b/, and /l/ often shifts to /w/. Aitchison explains the physical causes for these common phonetic and ultimately phonological changes. By far the most rigorous and useful chapter for me was "The Mad-Hatter's Tea Party", an admirably easy-to-grasp explanation of push chains and drag chains with plenty of examples.

As for the question in the subtitle, Aitchison ceaselessly stresses that language change is natural and unavoidable. She quotes from a long line of English-language purists, from Jonathan Swift to William Safire to show the absurdity of seeking to freeze language at a given moment. At the same time, she emphasises that languages do not evolve towards some ideal, but rather endlessly wheel about from one configuration to another.

I highly recommend this book to any student of historical linguistics. Even if you have some training in the field, you're bound to find something new and exciting in Aitchison's text.

Diane Larsen-Freeman is Professor Emerita of Education, Professor Emerita of Linguistics, and Former Director of the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is also a Distinguished Senior Faculty Fellow at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. Dr. Larsen-Freeman has been a conference speaker in over 60 countries of the world and has published over 100 articles in her areas of interest. Her Heinle/Cengage titles include "The Grammar Book: Form, Meaning, and Use for English Language Teachers" (third edition, 2015, co-authored with Marianne Celce-Murcia), "From Grammar to Grammaring" (2003, authored), and the fourth edition of "Grammar Dimensions: Form, Meaning, and Use" (2007, Series Director). From 1980-1985, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was Editor of the journal "Language Learning." In 1997, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was inducted into the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1999, she was selected by ESL Magazine as one of "the ESL pioneers." In 2000, she received the lifetime achievement award from Heinle & Heinle.

Excellent tool in the fight against prescriptivism and learning by rote

This book is a breath of fresh air. First, it constantly challenges the reader to reassess their own view of language and the impact of that view on the way they teach. Second, it provides an approach to teaching that does not rely on grammar drills and rote memorization, a paradigm that is far too prevalent and almost always proves boring and disheartening to both teacher and student. The book gives me hope that language teaching practices and curriculum can continue to evolve to better serve the malleability of language itself.

Ms. Larsen-Freeman is not content to review past theories and pedagogical practices. Instead, she reminds us that language theories are constantly evolving, as is language itself. It is difficult to find one narrow definition of language and an associated teaching practice that will suffice. Grammar is more than a list of rules to memorize; the author introduces the idea of "grammaring," an idea of grammar as more dynamic and constantly evolving. Thus, the way we teach grammar (and language as a whole) should reflect that.

However, in addition to shunning rote memorization teaching practices, Larsen-Freeman also cautions against the opposite extreme, which is disavowing all formal grammar instruction in favor of a more organic method based on models of real life language acquisition. She reminds us that language teaching should not just mimic natural language acquisition, but augment and accelerate it, and formal instruction of grammatical structures--when taught with proper appreciation of their dynamic properties--does play a strong role in teaching language.

I recommend this book to anyone just starting off in the fields of language teaching or language acquisition, as well as anyone who is frustrated with outdated teaching practices and arbitrary prescriptivism.

Understanding Grammar

This book doesn't provide grammar activities or explain grammar rules. What you will get is an understanding of what grammar really is. Grammar is not just the rules that your English teacher taught you back in high school. It is much more than rules. This book presents how grammar is viewed through Second Language Acquisition Theory. Also the author dismisses some common preconceptions about grammar that may be holding teachers back from understanding what grammar really is--a dynamic process. To gain a better understanding of this process, I recommend that teachers pick up this book. It's not so thick, so it should be a quick read.

The Nitty Gritty of Grammar...

I took the course (online) and realized that there was so much more detail that I wanted to know. This is where I will get it. The entries answer precisely the questions I have had. There are many fine points, nuances and distinctions that are difficult to understand without further explanation. This book provides that guidance.
