Fantastic Choice for Board Review

I completed my examination on 4/11/13 and can safely say that this review book was fantastic - covering the breadth and depth for topics on the examination very well. This was my sole resource for studying (aside from looking up specific topics that were brought to my attention in the book which I wanted to know more about and a review of ALSO) and I feel very good about that decision.

I've used Swanson and Core Content in the past, but this was much better, and included information which will change my practice. My background: practice inpatient, outpatient and maternity care and teach at a medical school/residency. Years experience: 10. # boards taken so far: 2.

My advice:
1. Study topics in order of the % of the examination (Respiratory, then Cardiac, etc.)
2. Take hand written notes while working through the book.
3. Review hand written notes every 3 chapters - for me, the act of writing things out cements it in my head.

Areas on which I wished I had spent a little more time: ID, Vaccinations, Neuro. Only other note is that this book was published in 2012, so as we move farther out from then, see if they have an update. My hope is that they will update online and make hard copy updates every 2-3 years. Good luck!

Excellent book!

I just took my recert. My practice is rural, strictly outpatient, no OB, about 5% peds. This book helped a lot. Would highly recommend this book. I only wish that I went through this book couple of times instead of wasting almost 1000 dollars on review prep which was such a waste of time and money. Absolute waste of time.

My opinion: this book is all that you need. Go through it couple of times paying attention to the helpful tips box. It really helped a lot. And pay particular attention to the explanation of wrong answers. Also if you are AAFP member, definitely do the board review questions.

Good for review for boards, in general, and I didn't fall asleep reading it.

I bought the kindle version which is a good format for this text. I originally bought Bratton's but tried out the kindle version of this and didn't even touch bratton's after that because the content was so good, and the humor actually helped. The text format includes a case question and the answers immediately following. It then goes over not only the correct answer, but why the other options were incorrect. This is lacking in a lot of review texts (Bratton's, Pretest). I prefer the "one question followed by answer" format compared to Swanson's where you take a short run of questions in one section without immediate answers. Maybe that's just my impatient personality, but it works for the kindle for this book. The Kindle version of Swanson's I tried but you have to flip each page back and forth, it didn't work for me. They also have charts intermixed to review comparisons that would otherwise take forever to describe. This book as of today is surprisingly up to date. I hope they keep this up because a lot of review books will do their first version, then put a new cover on it and reprint it as the "newest edition" without updating the content ("cough-First-Aid").

The humor is definitely a bonus because it keeps me awake, is not too cheesy, and is essentially the same as anyone's inner monologue when they see a particular patient. For instance, the toothless patient asking which of these two new inhalers you prescribed will keep him alive if he can't afford both? I had a patient like that 2 weeks ago, minus the toothless part, (but he was missing a foot).

What I also like about the kindle version in general is I can make highlights of correct statements, then go to a summary screen and review all the highlights I made in the text by themselves on a separate page for review. One thing kindle hasn't figured out yet is allowing us to export those into a format, but I could see that coming. It also mentions (in case you zone out) sentences that other people have highlighted (which made me feel good about myself if I already knew it).

The only negatives I have are actually not entirely negative. This text his hecka long. Took me more than a month just to get through it. Another negative, which is a negative for me was I felt like I was learning things I didn't really get the first time around, which isn't ideal for a review book. This is definitely in-depth enough for review for family medicine, about the best you can do for such a broad topic, and most entertaining.

Great book for understanding emotional impact

I had my first copy of this about twenty years ago and loaned it out, and it never came back, so I had to get another copy. This book gives a well designed pictorial and written view of the physical aspect of emotion. When I read it the first time, I was in awe of the idea of "emotional anatomy" and the potential uses in psychotherapy. Twenty three years into the field, now I think it should become part of any curriculum turning out potential "psychotherapists." The field has changed over two decades, and as physical well being become more and more part of our practice, it is imperative to understand how unexpressed emotions wear on the physical being. A must read for any one in at any practice level.

Interesting background reading and an excellent survey.

EARLY CHINESE LITERATURE. By Burton Watson. 304 pp. New York : Columbia University Press, 1962. ISBN 0-231-08671-7 (pbk.)
Burton Watson has always struck me as an eminently civilized scholar and as a fine translator. Unlike certain others, he wears his scholarship lightly, and doesn't overburden his books with extraneous matter. His many translations and studies of Chinese and Japanese Literature are of uniformly high quality, and are well worth owning as they are books one often to returns to.
In the present book he has given us an account of Chinese writing from the time of the Chou Dynasty (1100 B.C. to 249 B.C) to the middle of the Latter Han (A.D. 25 to A.D. 220). The important works of this period are described with many illustrative quotations.
After a brief but typically excellent Introduction, three main sections follow : HISTORY; PHILOSOPHY; POETRY. Each section includes a selected list of translations, and the book is rounded out with a Chronology and a detailed Index.
Of especial interest in the Introduction is Watson's discussion of Classical Chinese, where, after a few remarks on the nature of the language, he makes a point of telling us that "the reader should perhaps be reminded that when he reads these early Chinese works in translation, he is at many points reading not an incontovertible rendering of the meaning of the original, but only one of a variety of tentative interpretations" (p.12). This is a useful reminder for those laboring under the misapprehension that there can be such a thing as a 'definitive' translation from Classical Chinese.
Watson covers a wide range of topics in his book. HISTORY gives us his discussions of, and translations from, The Book of Documents, The Spring and Autumn Annals, The Tso chuan, The Kuo yu or Conversations from the States; The Chan-kuo ts'e or Intrigues of the Warring States; and several other works.
PHILOSOPHY takes up Confucian Writings such The Lun yu or Analects, The Meng Tzu or Mencius, the Hsun tzu, etc.; Ritual Texts such as The Li chi or Book of Rites, The Hsiao Ching or Classic of Filial Piety (in style and contents similar to the Li chi though transmitted separately), The I ching or Book of Changes, etc. Then follow the Mohist Writings, the Taoist Writings (The Lao tzu, The Chuang Tzu, The Lieh Tzu), Legalist Writings (Book of Lord Shang, The Han Fei Tzu) and Eclectic Writings (The Kuan Tzu).
POETRY offers Watson's interesting discussions of, and fine translations from, The Book of Songs, The Ch'u Tz'u or Elegies of Ch'u, The Han Fu, and a few selected Songs and Ballads.
Watson's book is civilized, informative, well-written, and richly illustrated, and can be strongly recommended as an excellent survey of a fascinating period, and as interesting background reading for both students and the general reader.

5 Stars for REA books!

This little 90 page book is incredible. It may be small but it's stuffed with hundreds of usefull words and phrases for the traveler or simply for the curious mind. Not to mention is prefaced with a breif history of the country and some interesting stats on the current republic of Romanina. You will also find some lovely black&whites of certain land marks and notable locations; like Dracula's castle. This book is incredibly helpful with those interesting accent and stress-markers that are so different to the English language. (Now I know why they say English is the most difficult language to learn!) The easy to read, easy to follow phonetics make pronunciations virtually fool-proof, without having to buy tapes.

If you are looking for a casual, easy to use, non-threatening, introduction into this beautiful and culturally diverse language, I highly recommend this book. It is the perfect stepping stone in your quest to being able to communicate in or at least understand the basics of Romanian!!

Pragmatic if not scholarly

This book can give English natives who do not master phonetic transcription of any kind a very useful idea of how to pronounce Romanian by reading and not listening--as close as native English speakers can get it. As long as students of Romanian possess no theoretical basis such as phonetic transcription (either American or European) which can help with reading a foreign language, and want to get a crash course in everyday phrases, this book provides an almost ideal approach to the learning of spoken Romanian--it is "nice and easy", as promised.

To those who want to learn it for more serious purposes, though--such as getting a better grasp of the language, writing correctly, or even taking academic courses in Romanian--I would suggest them to supplement with more serious books, such as the Teach Yourself Romanian Complete Course, for example.

like the title says. "Nice and Easy"

i bought this book because my girlfriend's family is from romania and she speaks the language. i wanted to learn the language so her family would see me trying to fit in and... well, let me fit in. after i got the book, i pulled out my phone and sent a text in romanian. she replied back in romanian. the only problem with the book is it does'nt go very deep. it's pretty short. i'd love it if the same people wrote something bigger in the same format. the pronunciation guides were great. if you're just looking at getting started at learning romanian, or you just want to impress a romanian/american girl (cuz they're so hot) buy the book.

Jargon, puffery and false pretenses

This book is not at all what its title and blurb suggest. It purports to help you to assess strategic alliances by using "metrics", which are defined as "that which should be measured" (at xi). Unfortunately, the author has a distinctly inadequate approach to this concept: she will tell you that you should use something as a "metric", but she does NOT tell you (i) how to measure it, or (ii) how to weight it against other "metrics" that are qualitatively different. If you are expecting the book to provide even a single template or checklist that will enable you to accumulate a bunch of metrics and compare them -- in fact, if you're expecting anything quantitative at all -- yours is a vain hope.

Moreover, the metrics she proposes are often quite vague. For example, she proposes "strategic alignment" and "strategy fit" as two separate metrics during the development of an alliance (at 43-49). The distinction between them is never made clear, although for the latter she includes a kind of flow diagram with 12 boxes filled with terminology like "Misson/Vison/Values", "SWOT", "Product Lines" etc., and other chestnuts from undergraduate business textbooks. Here are some other examples of metrics, verbatim (at 214): "Define expectations and success continually", "Educate the customer about [your company's] value," "Negotiation - change the conversation from how much to how good". Maybe these are good bits of advice in some contexts, but the use of the word "metric" for each of them is quite misleading.

The "case studies" that make up most of the book are no more illuminating about the nuts and bolts of implementing a measurement process. They consist mainly of the authors's big-company clients patting themselves on the back while describing the things that were important to them in various deals, without describing any process for scoring or comparing these factors.

The author does take great pains, however, to remind us that, e.g., she once did some research at Cal Tech, that her current firm (into which her old firm merged) is "considered the world experts in Negotiation and Relationship Management processes" (at 57), and that she wrote another book (which you are encouraged to buy and read). This constant huckstering is tiresome. So is the prose style. It's an endless permutation of empty business-speak like "leadership", hand-off," competency" and "critical", e.g., "leadership is critical at this stage" (as if it isn't at other stages?), or the non sequitur: "The operationalization metrics, a cumbersome term, relates [sic] to the multitude of activities that put flesh around the skeleton of the alliance. This is also the moment of alliance hand-off from those who developed and negotiated the alliance to those who must implement it [at 63]."

If you can tolerate soporific prose about alliances, you would be much better off reading Mark De Rond's "Strategic Alliances as Social Facts". In addition to critiquing the "life cycle" model of alliances on which Segil relies, it offers a great deal of substance -- including a convincing argument that the success or failure of alliances often is based on factors the parties didn't initially expect to measure.

I love Larraine Segil’s books and I am always waitig for the next one to come. Why is it so ? Because each one is a combination of three E’s : experience, example and expertise. And these three Es are present in her new book, measuring the value of partnering.
Experience : What Larraine writes is based on a solid experience, her personal experience as actor in the business community and now as top consultant . And when she deals with concepts connected with measuring something as important and delicate as partnering, she knows how to take advantage of present developments you should be following .
Example : Larraine is a living practioner of what she recommends and writes. She has been pioneering in the field of strategic alliances for years and has been personally successfull in initiating more than one with small or large organization. She brings in her book on measure examples of what is applied today in small and large organizations. It is on the basis of her merits that she seats on the Board of various organizations where she brings a most valuable contribution in the development and implementation of modern management tools.

Expertise. Last but not least, her book is seriously researched with a solid content. It brings something new .

Chronicle of the Blues and Beyond

Who will want this book in their library? Serious students of African-American music, scholars of American music history, those interested in music production, folks with a penchant for interpreting periods of history through their music, and just about anyone crazy about early blues and jazz. Black Recording Artists, 1877-1926 gives us a very detailed discography of what was recorded where, when, and by whom. For collectors of old music, this is a goldmine of information. Besides being a handy reference book to have on one's shelf, this hefty work is also a peek into a different life and time. One imagines someone a century from now researching the music of our times, laughing at some of the titles, wondering about some of the artists, and making connections between different musicians, vocalists, and studios.

Some of the strange song titles one encounters when browsing the book are the likes of: "Mama, Whip! Mama, Spank!" as well as "Got to Cool My Doggies Now," "A Green Gal Can't Catch On," and "You've Got to Beat Me to Keep Me." Song titles reflect the times, African-American lives, and national obsessions. As one reads through song titles, it is easy to start humming aloud as many of the songs are classics. Others are more obscure - and sometimes more interesting. At the end, though, one clear message rings through and that is how important the blues were during this period, how they helped to shape an entire culture, and how they speak to us today in much the same way they were intended to then.

As a discography, this is an excellent piece of work. One can't help but wish for a few photographs of some of the vocalists who recorded, though, or perhaps some narrative on the development of blues, jazz, or gospel. Even brief bios on certain singers would add a great deal to what is otherwise a valuable resource. Still, even lacking photos and singer bios, the book is incredibly detailed. The compiler has obviously put his life's work into this piece.

Wow! This book is the most comprehensive discography on the topic of Black Recording Artists across the turn of the century that I have ever found or read. Incredible research, detail, and a comprehensive understanding of the topic. Author Craig Gibbs obviously has a passion for the topic and is incredibly well researched. Brilliant!!!

Off the hook, read this book

Alex Ogg did a superb job in his book on Russel Simmons and Rick Rubin, founders of the record label, "Def Jam". Ogg gave the men who launched the careers of Jay-Z, LL Cool J, Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, and other stars of hip hop their props. While I found it was an insightful read, I discovered that homorous touches and memorable moments abound throughout the book. Since I am an fan of the Beastie Boys, I enjoyed the early part of the book which dealt with the rap/rock phenomenon in the 1980's, although I was a bit dissapointed that Ogg didn't delve more deeply into how Rubin got to be friends and roomates with Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock of Beastie-Boy fame.) Nevertheless, Alex Ogg, a gifted writer, knows how to put together a good Def Jam history book, and without a doubt loves hip-hop very much.

I had high expectations, and they were all met.

I've been a fan of Alex Ogg's works for a while, and have had a hard time finding a hard copy of this book. Luckily, I received a kindle in early January and was able to download and read it!

I found this book to be a detailed biography of the Def Jam label, as well as Rick Rubin and Russel Simmons. It contained information that I have not come across before (I've been a music-magazine glutton of publications world-wide for quite some time).

Ogg's writing style is friendly to both academics and the average joe picking up the book from their looking indie bookshop. His own personality shines through, with his occasional opinion made clear in a non-confrontational manner which leaves me with a knowing smile on my face.

I'm looking forward to reading more of Ogg's works!

My only criticism is that an extra chapter written in more recent years would be appreciated, especially looking at the murder of Jam Master Jay and how it impacted Simmons and/or Def Jam.
