This reads to me like the product of a second-rate publishing house that feels ...

I'll agree with those who say this was not well edited--and I don't mean proofreading. I mean organizing for clarity, efficiency, and consistency. This reads to me like the product of a second-rate publishing house that feels a need to cover trendy topics, recruits people who may be knowledgeable but are neither well known nor accomplished writers, gives them formulaic outlines that call for gimmicky sidebars and chatty asides, and imposes short deadlines. Then they fix most of the spelling errors, slop the text for each chapter into various ill-thought-out and repetitive sections, and call it good. I'm on page 3 of the hashing chapter and I've already been told four times that hashing is not reversible.

You can definitely learn from this book. I don't mean that the information is wrong. But the construction is so sloppy that I resent reading it. And I blame the publisher more than the writer. I bet the author gave McGraw Hill just what they asked for.

Worth purchasing!

I believe it is important to add a quick disclosure that I am not in the IT field and my review is based on my personal interest on Cryptography.

The title caught my attention, but I was hesitant and intimidated to purchase the book because I thought the content would be too complex for me to comprehend. After reading the description and several sample pages from the Kindle version, I went ahead and purchased the book. Needless to say, I believe the book is tailored for those who find the topic of Cryptography of interest and those new in the field of IT and security.

At every turn, terminologies were explicitly defined. The author continues to reiterate the importance of these terms through the use of the highlighted Lingo box. I appreciate how a complex subject matter was streamlined into simplistic form that non-IT readers, such as myself can grasp and appreciate. Throughout the book, the author included In My Humble Opinion, an incorporation of his personal and professional views regarding the section discussed. In addition, the inclusion of brief side notes (In Actual Practice), assist the readers to relate the content covered to major historical events and its current application to modern technology. The author’s choice to include such stories facilitates the reader to appreciate the clear connection between theory and practice.

There were a few errors in the book (as mentioned by a previous reviewer), along with the author’s choice of reusing several exact materials from the first chapter into the second. I found this a little confusing. If selected materials were essential, the author could restate them again in a different way. Although the book contained minor errors (as with any books published – I have yet to read a book free of errors), they were not a significant hindrance to the flow and its objective.

Overall, I recommend this book for those who find the topic of interest. The simplicity and clarity of the content, coupled with fun cryptography puzzles captured and retained the attention of this non-IT reader.

A surprisingly accurate and detailed childrens book on gladiators that avoids most of the inaccuracies found in books of this genre. Excellent illustrations. I highly recommend it to any child who wants a good introduction to the idols of the arena.

Marcus Noland is the author of Korea after Kim Jong-il (2004), Avoiding the Apocalypse: The Future of the Two Koreas (2000), Pacific Basin Developing Countries: Prospects for the Future (1990); coauthor of Industrial Policy in an Era of Globalization: Lessons from Asia (2003), No More Bashing: Building a New Japan-United States Economic Relationship (2001), and Global Economic Effects of the Asian Currency Devaluations (1998). He is a senior fellow at the Institute for International Eonomics and formerly a senior economist at the Council of Economic Advisers in the Executive Office of the President of the United States. Howard Pack has been a professor of business and public policy and professor of economics at the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania) since 1986. He has been a professor of management there since 1995 and was the professor of city and regional planning (1986-94). He has also taught at Swarthmore College and Yale University. He has served as a consultant for a host of World Bank projects over the past three decades and has been an adviser to the Bank's Global Development Network since 1999. He is the author or coauthor of Industrial Policy in an Era of Globalization: Lessons from Asia (2003), Productivity, Technology and Industrial Development (Oxford University Press, 1987) and Structural Change and Economic Policy in Israel (Yale University Press, 1971).

Fabulously Fun Read!

If Mr. Smith's first book is an indication of things to come, he will quickly become one of my son's favourite authors. Mine too, actually. Although The Boy, an 8-year old 3rd grader, loves to read on his own, he still indulges my Mommy Moments and allows me to occasionally read a book with him. To me, Summer of the Woods is the ideal book for this, because it has something for adults, as well as for children.

As if by magic, Mr. Smith presents the perfect combination of nostalgia and modern day. This exemplifies the summers I remember. Freely roaming all around, turning over rocks in creeks, exploring woods and caves while our imaginations provided limitless adventures. Kids being kids. Good times, good stuff.

On the other hand, there are some pretty cool tools that we, as parents, have today, that I bet my folks would have welcomed. Google. Oh, how I love Google, as a mom. Kids will always be curious, and the "new" advantage of quickly answering their questions with information and pictures at your fingertips allows their little minds to just keep going and going. Which is why they are so darn smart, as brilliantly demonstrated in this story.

Two young boys move to Richmond, Virginia; into a large, old house, backed by woods and a winding creek. So, yes, I am a bit biased, but only because Mr. Smith captures the essence of my home so accurately and vividly. In no time at all, young Sam finds an old wheat penny, which leads them to the discovery of the legendary mystery. Supposedly, a valuable and rare coin collection was stolen from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts many, many years ago and was never recovered. As all good boys would do, the brothers make it their mission to solve the crime and recover the treasure. What follows is a classic adventure that you simply must experience.

I admit that I went into this book with high expectations. Not only was I not disappointed, but I was quite surprised to find so many things that I love about this book. The dialogue and teasing among the family is spot-on. The mystery was fun, interesting, and authentic. The boys' emotions and actions are more than credible---these are typical 8 and 10 year old boys. The story flowed so smoothly that I actually read this in one sitting, although that wasn't my plan when I picked it up.

Sidebar: For the 3rd consecutive year, all of the students in my son's elementary school (K-5) will be reading the same book, at the same time, with their families. The first year was E.B. White's The Trumpet of the Swan and last year was George Selden's The Cricket in Times Square. Both books were fine, but not necessarily captivating. Neither The Boy nor I had any desire to quickly seek out more books by these authors (because I had already read Charlotte's Web about 100 times). Summer of the Woods is this year's book. Yes, I cheated. I read ahead, and on my own. I am not even sorry. But, there is one issue that I foresee. With the other two books it was very easy to read one chapter each day and then put the book down. I don't see that being the case with this page-turner; but, as a reader, I honestly can't see that as a bad thing.

I can't wait to see what the kids think of this story, and I'm already very excited about Mr. Smith's next book: Mystery on Church Hill.

Sign On For Adventure

As a teacher I find it challenging to find an adventure book for students that is both engaging and suitable to share at the elementary level. Summer of the Woods is a keeper. The story is engaging, the suspense is authentic, and the characters are accessible to young readers. My entire class thoroughly enjoyed the fast-paced and well-conceived novel by Mr. Smith. Both boys and girls clamored for the next book in the series, which is a huge score for any teacher or parent. It does have a wholesome quality to it that harkens back to mystery books of my own youth, however, it deftly weaves language and topics of a modern generation into it so that my upper elementary friends found characters with whom they would gladly follow into the woods to seek adventure on a Saturday afternoon.

We were so fortunate to have Mr. Smith come speak to our school in small groups. He captivated the students and gave them great advice on crafting their own stories. I especially loved that he spoke to my students much as I imagine he would speak to Derek and Sam. It was evident that he respects the insights and ingenuity of children, which I imagine is why his books are so enchanting. If you can manage to have him speak to your group, you will be find the audience enthralled by his humor and earnest love for writing for children. If that is not possible, read the book; it may just inspire you to look for your own adventure.

They LOVED it.

I ordered this to read to my twin 6 y.o. grandchildren (yes,indeed they are the smartest and cutest ever). They have loved being read to since infancy, and it's one of my fave things to do when I see them. This was the longest book I've ever read to them, and I was a bit concerned about keeping them focused-no worry. They were literally on the edge of their seat (or more precisely hanging from my shoulders) during most of the read. They immediately got the family dynamics, they were both seriously on edge a few times, then when the plot point resolved and everyone was still in one piece, they fell down laughing at how cool it all was. They each learned some new words ("crevice" was a cool one to add to their vocabulary), and they devoted much time to discussing the story. It was exceedingly well done for the audience, appropriate level of anxiety, plenty of twists, and a total blast to read. I just ordered Volumes 2-4 for Christmas visits. Well done Mr. Smith.

About the Author
Will Durant (1885 1981) was awarded the Pulitzer Prize (1968) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1977). He spent more than fifty years writing his critically acclaimed eleven-volume series, "The Story of Civilization" (the later volumes written in conjunction with his wife, Ariel). insights of busy people

On the meaning of life W. Durant

The upshot of this effort is that really famous people were too busy to think deeply about Durant's assignment. Nor are the driven insightful about the roots of their own frenetic behavior. These difficulties were expected and the outcome predictable. Nonethless, it is an interesting collection of disparate reactions.

Big Disappointment

Having been working my way through "History of Civilization" I regard Will Durant almost as a god. Alas, this little volume is a big disappointment. In it Durant solicits opinions from major voices of the period in which he wrote it -- 1930 -- on the meaning of life. What he got in return were mostly banal, terse or rambling responses which didn't seem to have much meaning. Many of the correspondents frankly admitted, in one fashion or another, that they were too busy to answer the question. I kept turning the pages, looking for a gem of wisdom that I could hang my hat on, but really came up with nothing. Maybe it's because any answer to the question would be ineffable. In any case, while I applaud the effort by my hero Durant, I felt the book was a waste of time.

A Bit of A Disappointment Overall, But Some Bright Spots

I was convinced that I really had to read this book given Durant's reputation and some "promo" for it that I saw which I paraphrase here:

Within their varied insights, the reader will note a consistent thread running through their viewpoints, revealing a commonality among human beings who not only seek meaning in life, but who actually achieve it.

Shockingly, Durant's advice to the potential suicide was (as readers will see described early in the book) to get a job and/or have a good meal. Maybe I am not taking this the right way as I was not standing there to hear how he said this, but this sounded pretty flippant to say to a potential suicide (and it being 1930, the depression and all). As it turned out, the man had a job and was not hungry. He left unimpressed and was not heard from again. Should we be surprised?

I thought to myself at this point that maybe I did not want to read this book after all, but I had gone to a lot of trouble to get it, and it is rather short at only about 110 pages, so I kept going.

The letter that Durant sent out and some initial comments were pretty depressing stuff. He was not big on God - maybe that was part of his problem, but I won't speculate any more on that. Oddly, he did seem to think that atheists should leave "believers" alone about what they believed even if the "believers" were probably wrong - he said that atheists who liked to burst bubbles exhibited the "mark of a shallow and ungenerous mind". Guess Durant was really an agnostic as I hear he claimed to be.

The answers he got to his letter or at least those he published here were fairly superficial in my opinion for the most part - most of the more intelligible points made (vaguely) involved work and/or family as giving meaning to life. Some were almost rudely superficial - I felt bad for Durant in those cases. Some of the "ruder ones" never seemed to have a problem from what I have seen going on and on about a lot of nonsense in other writings, but could not or maybe would not make an effort here. Makes one wonder. God did not figure very much in most replies.

That being said (about superficiality), a few of the replies were good, but I think two were especially so and worth pointing out. One was from Abbe (Ernest) Dimnet, who for example, took Durant to task (although he did it politely) about reaching such pessimistic conclusions on the subject at hand with what might be incomplete data. I had never heard of this guy before (and I must admit that I had never heard of many of the others who replied either but 1930 was a long time ago), but apparently Dimnet wrote a book called THE ART OF THINKING that made him as popular as Dale Carnegie when the book reviewed here was written. Interestingly to me at least, it seems that Dimnet also wrote a book on French grammar (available in full on google books) that looks quite useful if that subject interests you. If nothing else, I learned about Dimnet by reading this book. If his "ART" book is anything like his letter here, it is worth finding and reading.

The second of the replies that I will mention specifically is by one Owen Middleton - then a life-term convict at Sing Sing in New York state no less. This guy wrote very well and had a lot of positive things to say, especially considering where he was writing from here. Apparently, it was the publishers idea to get this viewpoint not so much Durant's.

Durant finishes up with a reply to a letter he got from a suicide - what is it with him and suicidal people? This was much more hopeful I think that what he wrote before it, even if not all that profound - well it was a little profound here and there I guess. He seemed to be big on work, home and family. As to God, well, he was the sketchy agnostic.

All in all, I would only weakly recommend this book. I had hoped for more. Maybe that says something about me and my search for meaning. I'll have to think about that some more.
