The Beautiful Cigar Girl: Mary Rogers, Edgar Allan Poe, and the Invention of Murder, by Daniel Stashower

On July 28, 1841, the body of Mary Rogers, a twenty-year-old cigar girl, was found floating in the Hudson-and New York's unregulated police force proved incapable of solving the crime. One year later, a struggling writer named Edgar Allan Poe decided to take on the case-and sent his fictional detective, C. Auguste Dupin, to solve the baffling murder of Mary Rogers in "The Mystery of Marie Rogt."

From Publishers Weekly
The author of Edgar winner Teller of Tales now recounts the story of Manhattan tobacco store clerk Mary Rogers, a mysterious beauty whose posse of admirers made her a minor celebrity in 1841 in various newspapers' society pages. The discovery that year of her mutilated corpse fueled a public outcry and a newspaper circulation war, as well as a fictional magazine serial by Edgar Allan Poe featuring his famous detective Dupin speculating on the murder of working-class Parisian "Marie Rogt." Poe rightly deduced that Mary wasn't a victim of the gang violence that plagued New York City in the absence of an effective police presence. But he came late to the accepted theory that Mary had died of a botched abortion and had to tweak his final installment to maintain his and Dupin's reputations. Although Stashower's account bogs down in comparisons of Poe's revisions of the Rogt manuscript, it's a generally absorbing account of the birth of the modern detective story. The sordid details of Mary Rogers's stunted life pale in comparison with Poe's own love-starved childhood, self-destructive tidal wave of alcoholism, poverty and rants against publishers and rivals; Poe's genius and literary legacy are hauntingly drawn here. From Booklist
Mystery novelist Stashower, who won a nonfiction Edgar for Teller of Tales (1999), a biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, returns to his historical roots in this examination of a celebrated murder in 1840s New York City that turned Edgar Allan Poe into an amateur sleuth. The text ably weaves the story of a young woman, celebrated for her beauty and her untimely death, with that of Poe, whose poems and stories often celebrated the deaths of young, beautiful women. Mary Rogers worked behind the counter of a cigar store in Manhattan in 1841; she was so beautiful that the store was jammed with her admirers. On July 28, 1831, three days after Rogers had gone missing, her body was found floating in the Hudson. The press seized on her murder, but the New York police force (depicted by Stashower as completely disorganized) failed to find her killer. One year later, Poe (just after the success of his detective Dupin in "The Murders in the Rue Morgue") proposed to his publisher that he investigate this famous cold case. Although Stashower works a bit hard to invest this murder with multiple levels of significance, it remains an intriguing story, one that sheds considerable light on the snares of a big city for a young woman. Expect this book to attract readers who were entranced by The Devil in the White City (2003), another account of crime in the nineteenth century. Connie Fletcher

"Nevermore"
By Frank J. Konopka
Although this book holds itself out to be a review of the grisly murder of Mary Rogers in 1841 New York, it appears to, instead, turn into a biography of Edgar Allan Poe. That's not to say that this is a bad thing, but perhaps the title should have reflected that more than it does. The book is well written, with emphasis on what the newspapers of the time reported. That there is no solution to the murder mystery does dampen the enthusiasm of the reader somewhat, but that's what often happens when dealing with true crimes. I found the atmosphere presented very tangible, and I did enjoy the Poe biography (I've been to his grave in Baltimore), so the book held my interest. Perhaps others, not as interested in Poe as I am, will not find the book as enjoyable to read.

One girl goes missing and transforms history
By C. Ebeling
THE BEAUTIFUL CIGAR GIRL is attention-holding social and literary history nimbly written by Daniel Stashower. It is the story of a real crime committed in July 1841 in or about New York City that transfixed the media of the day, challenged Edgar Allan Poe to put his detective fiction theories to the test and transformed New York before eventually fading away in the public consciousness a few decades later.

If there is something to be learned by the ubiquitous episodes of the "Law and Order" and "CSI" franchises, it is that a murder is never straightforward. Just like those shows, when the lovely, alluring yet innocent seeming Manhattan store clerk who worked in a popular smoke shop frequented by men of all walks of life goes missing and her body is later found washing up near a waterfront park in Hoboken, New Jersey, Pandora's box is opened. Circumstantial evidence suggests connections to the city's gang culture and abortionists. There is a revolving door of individual suspects, too, who may or may not have been the victim's swains. The police department is largely night watchmen and process servers prone to corruption and unequal to the task of fighting and detecting crime. Then the media steps in and it is hyped beyond belief. In Philadelphia, where he has taken umbrage after burning just about every personal and professional bridge in New York, Poe reads the newspaper accounts and realizes that his ever-present money problems and professional ambitions could be resolved by inserting the fictive detecting methods he created for "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." He puts himself on the line, advertising that in his new story starring his detective Dupin, "The Mystery of Marie Roget," he will solve the puzzle.

To say more is to spoil this very real plot. I think Stashower does a fine job of balancing and interweaving the various strands of biography, social history, crime detection and the birth of detective fiction. He has a very direct but graceful way of writing and ordering his information. He evokes 19th century New York vividly. If you liked THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY, then you should enjoy this. My only complaint, too small to demote the book a star, is that I wish the author were more explicit as to naming his sources when he quotes, for instance, "a writer of the day." There is a considerable bibliography at the end, but no idea which source gave up what information per se.

Beautiful Cigar Girl is!
By Annie
Daniel Stashower's newst book is a compendium of exacting scholarship; tight writing and razor sharp historical sleuthing that we have come to know from this modern master of the historical biography. The Beautiful Cigar Girl traces the murder of a popular commoner of the 19th century whose death captivated the press, ushering in a new era of sensationalism. Stashower does not duck the responsibility of going toe to toe with the hard facts and the murky details of the time and places. He edges into this story with the undeniably fascinating character of no less than Edgar Allan Poe and his interest in this most unusual story. While there have been at least 4 or 5 texts to deal with this murder, these figures and E. A. Poe's involvement, none holds a candle to this opus by the Edgar Award winning Stashower. His award is safe and worthy of the man it is named after, and how appropriate that EAP should sit on his shelf overlooking this story that never ends...for this volume makes us reconsider our modern press and every "murder of the century" from the story at hand right up to the Amish massacre recently. One word describes this massive amount of work, scholarship and raw talent: Bravo!

It was okay. Some of the details in the story were inconsistent. Callie supposedly forgot to leave her necklace at the beginning of the book but later says she kept it because it was the nicest gift she had received. Story was very predictable. Doubt I would read any others in this series.

These bears are definitely warm and cuddly - to the right woman!
By Darlene Tallman
First book I've read by this author and I enjoyed it immensely, as I have been bouncing back and forth between a few different genres lately, including shifter/paranormals!

The female (Callie) who is running (literally) for her life with her beloved sister stumbles into a town of bear shifters. When the two brothers catch her scent and realize she is "the one", the game is on! Good dialogue, a nasty ex, and two hot guys who desire their mate made this a fun and quick read. The Unobservable Universe: A Paradox-Free Framework for Understanding the Universe, by Scott M. Tyson

Were ancient Greek philosophers right about reality being only an illusion? What was really the biggest blunder of Einstein's life? Is everything we've been taught about the universe incorrect? In The Unobservable Universe, visionary scientist and engineer Scott M. Tyson successfully unravels cosmology from the level of rocket science and brings it down to Earth, demystifying the universe in terms that laymen can comprehend and enjoy, splitting atoms but not hairs on this magical mystery tour of the outback of time and space.

Tapping nearly three millennia of scientific philosophy and drawing upon his three decades as a prolific researcher, brilliant scientist and inspiring writer, Tyson artfully deconstructs key misunderstandings that modern science inadvertently continues to embrace - unraveling the inconsistencies and paradoxes emerging from contemporary science and science philosophy, dissecting complex principles and debunking long-held premises with illustrative examples to expose vital new insights. His provocative theories, supported with pragmatic anecdotes and symbolic metaphors, translate quantum physics into a master blueprint for all cosmology readers to examine, explore and contemplate.

Tyson effectively illustrates the meaning of perceptions in a way that will prompt scientists to fundamentally rethink preconceived notions and consider new possibilities. He guides readers in a bold, new direction that provides a coherent framework in which they can truly understand the universe and the underlying Theory of Everything. Informative and illuminating, this groundbreaking book's lively style provides an enlightening and entertaining page-turner, laced with a brilliant combination of compelling theory, solid research, simple analogy, contagious enthusiasm and enough humor to break a smile on the faces of even the most serious cosmologists. Tyson propels readers toward a new state of thinking, with a greater awareness and understanding of the mysteries of the universe that more accurately reflects its truths and realities. As a benchmark for cosmology, The Unobservable Universe will forever change the way we look at our world.

Generally good, but with minor reservations
By AndrewBL
I am, according to my Kindle software, about 84% of the way through the Unobservable Universe. On the whole, I like the book, and it certainly appeals to my cosmological intuition; however, not being a physicist, it's difficult for me to argue with the author's premises. I've read relatively widely in astrophysics and cosmology, starting with Steven Wineberg's "The First Three Minutes". From a philosophical point of view, this book is very satisfying. It should prove worthy also from a theological point of view since a First Cause is still implied, though I'm not sure that Mr. Tyson intended this. While attempting to provide a type of response to String Theorists, I'm afraid that one non-testable thesis is replaced by another. It appears that one could interpret the vacuum field, and its virtual (and real) particles as a product of the Voidverse (read the book), this becomes a sort of circular argument since, by Mr. Tyson's own admission, the void hemiverse is beyond observation (hence, not testable), at least directly. I do have a feeling that his concept of entanglement (although he doesn't deal with deconstruction)"feels" right in terms of a photon's ability to take every possible path in the Universe before measurement/observation (viz. twin slot experiment).

There is a certain repetition in Prof. Tyson's writing style that, for this reader, was a bit tedious, as was the overly familiar and jocular asides. This should, in no way, dissuade a potential reader from buying the book, because the overall experience is very satisfying. If subsequent books, contemplated by the author, are to appear, I would suggest he write it using a twin track, e.g., read this chapter to consolidate your understanding, or, move on to chapter such and such, to bypass it and move ahead.

While I decry Logical Positivism, or an overly reductionist approach as a means to fully understand Unity, I also recognize that the science of physics has led us to the point where writers like Prof. Tyson can attempt books like the Unobservable Universe, which I applaud. This book reminds me of thought experiments, such as Einstein's, and it appears to be a clarion call that Physics needs to head back in this direction, and reduce (not eliminate) its over-dependence upon big machine physics. (Thought experiments certainly require less funding.) Clearly, the various reductions and other scientific extrapolations will eventually have to be reassembled into a new paradigm to satisfy both objectivity and intuition. It seems that Science is pointing the way to God (however that notion is conceived), and this book appears to be pointing the way. Certainly I believe with the emerging re-conceptualization of God that is currently underway. (I also agree with Prof. Tyson regarding Robert Lanza's book on Biocentrism.) This book is a good read, and it will cause you to think about the possibilities.

Food For Thought
By Jim Hanlon
I've only read the first 50 pages (and I do plan to complete the book), but I there are some aspects of the book, even in the first 50 pages, that motivated me to post this partial review. First, the book is interesting. The author visits interesting aspects of physics and cosmology. He definitely has a point of view and is relentless and somewhat overly repetitious in making his case. He appears to unfairly castigate scientists for close-mindedness once a theory is generally accepted - which is not my personal experience. And considering the quantity of claims and assertions the author makes in developing his arguments, the book is poorly footnoted. The "Reference and Notes" section at the end of the book contain only 20 entries, and 9 of them are from Wikipedia - never a good sign. Also I think he goes overboard in defending his assertions. A key assertion is that "everything we've ever learned is wrong". An example cited is that we were taught in high school geometry; that parallel lines meet at infinity. Well, I for one was never taught that parallel lines meet at infinity in a Euclidean plane (and I was in high school during the same time and approximate location as the author). And as a geometry teacher I never taught that parallel lines in a Euclidean plan meet at infinity. The idea of "lines at infinity" is a concept developed by mathematicians to make the transition to projective planes, which is a different concept. So the author is now (at page 50) 0 for 1 in demonstrating that things I learned were wrong. I'll give you his final batting average when I complete the book.

What are you waiting for?
By Afsi Ghafourian
I've always wanted to learn more about quantum physics, the universe, and everything. I wanted a book that would keep my interest, wouldn't get me lost half way through reading it, and would help me understand topics such as black holes, Mass-Energy of the universe, Einstein's relativity theory, time travel and more. Well, I found that book. The unobservable Universe by Scott Tyson is a book everyone would enjoy reading. Whether you are a high school student, a biologist, a PHD in physics, or just a curious mind you would learn a lot from this book. Scott takes you through a journey of time, and patiently, with clear examples and experiments explains his theory on matter, energy, light , gravity and the relativity of it all. He takes you through 2500 years of studies of life and the universe. He fearlessly challenges Aristotle, Newton, Einstein, and offers new thinking to the big bang theory that is chilling and compelling.

The book has a great pace from the beginning to the end, explaining the kinds of measurements in quantum physics with humor and thought provoking history behind the field. He gives a background and clear explanation when referencing terms unknown to the average layman.

Scott also does a beautiful job with a 4 page summary of the entire book, revisiting the main objective and his reasoning behind his controversy of the universe expansion or contraction. The book is entertaining, light, easy to follow, and has a great flow from beginning to the end. The unobservable Universe is a must have in anyone's collection of scientific books.

This 2007 Newbery Honor Book is a humorous and heartwarming debut about feeling different and finding acceptance. Now in After Words paperback!

Twelve-year-old Catherine just wants a normal life. Which is near impossible when you have a brother with autism and a family that revolves around his disability. She's spent years trying to teach David the rules from "a peach is not a funny-looking apple" to "keep your pants on in public"---in order to head off David's embarrassing behaviors.
But the summer Catherine meets Jason, a surprising, new sort-of friend, and Kristi, the next-door friend she's always wished for, it's her own shocking behavior that turns everything upside down and forces her to ask: What is normal?

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7-Twelve-year-old Catherine has conflicting feelings about her younger brother, David, who is autistic. While she loves him, she is also embarrassed by his behavior and feels neglected by their parents. In an effort to keep life on an even keel, Catherine creates rules for him (It's okay to hug Mom but not the clerk at the video store). Each chapter title is also a rule, and lots more are interspersed throughout the book. When Kristi moves in next door, Catherine hopes that the girl will become a friend, but is anxious about her reaction to David. Then Catherine meets and befriends Jason, a nonverbal paraplegic who uses a book of pictures to communicate, she begins to understand that normal is difficult, and perhaps unnecessary, to define. Rules of behavior are less important than acceptance of others. Catherine is an endearing narrator who tells her story with both humor and heartbreak. Her love for her brother is as real as are her frustrations with him. Lord has candidly captured the delicate dynamics in a family that revolves around a child's disability. Set in coastal Maine, this sensitive story is about being different, feeling different, and finding acceptance. A lovely, warm read, and a great discussion starter.-Connie Tyrrell Burns, Mahoney Middle School, South Portland, ME

From Booklist
Gr. 4-7. "No toys in the fish tank" is one of many rules that 12-year-old Catherine shares with her autistic younger brother, David, to help him understand his world. Lots of the rules are practical. Others are more subtle and shed light on issues in Catherine's own life. Torn between love for her brother and impatience with the responsibilities and embarrassment he brings, she strives to be on her parents' radar and to establish an identity of her own. At her brother's clinic, Catherine befriends a wheelchair-bound boy, Jason, who talks by pointing at word cards in a communication notebook. Her drawing skills and additional vocabulary cards--including "whatever" (which prompts Jason to roll his eyes at his mother)--enliven his speech. The details of autistic behavior are handled well, as are depictions of relationships: Catherine experiences some of the same unease with Jason that others do in the presence of her brother. In the end, Jason helps Catherine see that her rules may really be excuses, opening the way for her to look at things differently. A heartwarming first novel. Cindy Dobrez

she realizes how instead of getting annoyed with David’s behaviors
By Annette
Rules, a realistic fiction novel written by Cynthia Lord describes a young teen living with her autistic brother and the struggles she faces while trying to have an adventurous summer with a new friend and having to deal with the stigma attached to her brother. The main character, Catherine, matures throughout the book with how she deals with her brother, David, and how she begins to accept his disabilities. At first, she is very embarrassed by David and his actions in public, but through meeting a special friend, Jason, at occupational therapy (OT), she realizes how instead of getting annoyed with David’s behaviors, she should learn to accept them and view things more positively. From the beginning of the book it is clear how insecure Catherine feels about having a brother with autism. She takes care of him a lot, but is incredibly strict with him by trying to make set rules for everything he does. David does learn these rules, but as the book continues, it seems that the rules are more “helpful” for Catherine’s feelings then for David himself. We first see Catherine’s self consciousness appear when she has a new next door neighbor, a girl her age named Kristi. All Catherine wants is a friend for the summer since her best friend is not home. She hopes she can hide David from Kristi, fearing that he would scare her off and she would not want to be Catherine’s friend. However, when Kristi does meet David, she is not immediately scared off. An ongoing issue throughout the book is how frustrated Catherine gets that she was to babysit and help David more than (she feels) her parents do. Instead of viewing her time with David as special sibling bonding time, she views it as a burden, continuously thinking about what she could be doing if she did not have to be with her brother. The only time we see Catherine genuinely excited about being with David is when she goes with her mom to take David to OT. Catherine made a new friend there, Jason, who is a boy about her age in a wheelchair and is nonverbal. They communicate through Jason’s communications book, where Catherine takes it upon herself to draw and create new words to fill up Jason’s book. She surprises him each week with a set of new words to learn so they have a better way of talking and getting to know each other. Immediately, they form a close connection, each making the other jump out of their comfort zone in some way or another. Instead of viewing and treating Jason the way she treats David, Catherine truly treats him like her friend. When Jason said he wants to run, Catherine has the idea to take him outside in the parking lot, and run while pushing him, so he could get the rush and feeling of freedom. Jason invites Catherine to his birthday party, where she decides to spend all her savings to buy him a used guitar so he could practice making music. At his party, Jason decides to ask Catherine to the community dance that night, and when she hesitates and makes excuses, not only does he call her out but also he asks why she is embarrassed of him. This is the moment when Catherine finally puts into perspective how she treats Jason and David, and how she should. She realizes that just like her, they are normal people who deserve getting treated fairly. After apologizing and asking Jason to the dance, she explains to him that she realized it was never about being embarrassed of him, it was her own insecurity of how people would view her.

Lord does a fantastic job with introducing the reader into the mind of two boys with disabilities, but also, the perspectives of family members and friends who are very relevant in these kids’ lives. Rules was Cynthia Lord’s first novel, and has won two awards: the 2007 Newberry Honor Book award and the Schneider Family Book Award. She then went on to write three more young adult books. I feel as if this book if very eye opening but also heart warming to any reader. Even though it is meant for ages 8-12, I still found myself, a 20-year-old college student, laughing, crying, and truly connecting to all the characters in this novel. I think everyone should read this to get incite into families with children that have special needs, but also, to, like Catherine, discover how to treat people with disabilities. Without being too simple or too intense of a story, Lord creates characters and a plotline that every age can enjoy and understand.

Engaging Read Filled With Light And Love
By Robert Errera
We create rules as a way to manage our time, personalities, and behaviors. We make rules in order to control our lives and give order to the world around us. Rules let us agree on a common way of acting, of certain expectations being met, and of certain boundaries not being crossed. Rules tell us how to live.

Following rules and finding our place in the world is central to Cynthia Lord’s Rules , a powerful young adult novel about a fifth grade girl, Catherine, and her autistic brother, David. Along the way they befriend a non-verbal, wheelchair-bound boy named Jason, who, despite his physical limitations, helps set Catherine free of her self-imposed and restrictive “rules.” After all, rules are meant to be broken.

Catherine wishes her brother’s autism would simply disappear, that he’d just wake up “normal” one day. But in case that doesn’t happen, she’s compiling a list of rules so “at least he’ll know how the world works, and I won’t have to keep explaining things.”

Catherine gives voice to the siblings of special needs individuals everywhere when she notes:

“Everyone expects a tiny bit from him and a huge lot from me.”

Later, Catherine talks honestly with her father.

“I have to matter, too. As much as work and your garden, and even as much as David. I need you, too.”

Catherine ponders the nature of her brother’s disability. As the father of a son with autism I found her insights packed an emotional wallop. (Note: Cynthia Lord is the mother of boy with autism.)

“How can his outside look so normal and his inside be so broken? Like an apple, red perfect on the outside, but mushy brown at the first bite.”

Catherine struggles with being both embarrassed by her brother and protective of him in equal measure. She hates when people treat her brother “like he’s invisible. It makes me mad, because it’s mean and it makes me invisible, too.”

Two of Catherine’s most simple rules are the most profound.

There are flaws in all of us—not just those with special needs.

And

We all try to do the best we can to fit in, but things don’t always end up the way we intend.

There are quite a few laughs here, and a few weepy emotional moments, too. Some of the most profound highlight the differences in Catherine and David’s mental capacities. At one point both kids get a chance to make a wish. Catherine says:

I wish everyone had the same chances. Because it stinks a big one that they don’t. What about you?

David wishes for grape soda.

Cynthia Lord plays it straight in Rules, and doesn’t overdo it on the sentimentality. The result is an engaging read filled with light and love. A couple of Lord’s rules are bound to stick with you after the novel’s close:

Sometimes you’ve gotta work with what you’ve got.

And

Looking closer can make something beautiful.

Autism and physical disabilities in Rules: Accurate and fun to read.
By Amazon Customer
Of all of the rules 12 year old Catherine makes for her little brother, David, "sometimes you've gotta work with what you've got" is quite fitting when it comes to describing what it is like to have someone in your life born with a disability. Cynthia Lord enables the reader of her book, Rules, to come to understand what it is like to grow up with someone with autism. The character David shows many of the classic symptoms of autism including sensory sensitivity, functional echolalia, obsession with certain interests, and lack of social interaction skills. In the story, one of the other key characters is a 15 year old boy named Jason Morehouse. Jason has a physical disability which restricts him to a wheel chair and an apparent voice disability which limits his communication to pointing at words in a communication book. While I am not certain what specific category this low-incidence disability might fall under, it is captured in the book in as respectful and accurate a manor as David's autism. When Catherine's family brings David to occupational therapy she befriends Jason through her artistic talent when she offers to make and illustrate more words for his communication book. The main conflict in the story arises when Kristi, a girl Catherine desperately wants to be friends with, urges Catherine to invite Jason to a community dance. Catherine is scared to tell Kristi about Jason's disability because of what others might think of her. This specific conflict concerning Jason mirrors the overall conflict concerning her brother David. Catherine dislikes the way the world sees her brother and Jason but does not want to be seen as having a problem either. "The rest of the world isn't like the clinic. Other places, people stare. Or they hurry away, and I know what they're thinking. `Oh, isn't that too bad.' or "What's wrong with that kid?' ... I get so sick of it" (Lord, 179). Catherine's feelings and fears are perfectly valid. The story is very accurate when it comes to the negative reactions Catherine describes, but it also does a good job portraying the positive reactions as well. At one point Catherine takes Jason in his wheel chair out to the parking lot to "run". Pushing him as fast as she can, in that moment she doesn't care what anybody thinks of her or how she looks. When they stop and look around, many people are smiling and even cheering them on. When Catherine's brother comes with her to Jason's birthday party, Jason's family understands and accepts David warmly. In the positive and negative reactions of society described here, and in the way the individuals with disabilities are represented, Rules is accurate and fair. Not only will I use this book to give my students a compassionate perspective of what life is like for their classmates with disabilities, but also how life is for peers related to disabled persons.

A Good Starting Point
By Phillip Bussey
This guide is a good starting point on a way of thinking about what is a complex issue that is likely a day to day problem for physicians, and one about which few are taught much during their training. Start here, but please understand there are limitations associated with this approach that may raise questions about the foundation for their opinions that an evaluator will likely have difficulty answering short of referring back to elements used with which they may not be totally familiar.

For example, the authors suggest basing the evaluation on a patient's risk, capacity, and tolerance for work activity, using in part the Social Security Administration's (SSA) criteria for the degree of impairment present for one body system or another. See[...] for the listing that is current as of July 18, 2011.

No reference appears to be made to the fact that the Administration holds to themselves in a legal sense the interpretation of these listings, and even the SSA does not use a literal interpretation of the guidelines, but rather consider them as they may have been modified over time by other regulations and court decisions. Consequently the SSA is quite likely to disagree with an evaluator's stated opinion to the effect that a patient does not appear to meet the guidelines so they are able to work. This may be due in part to the fact that the SSA considers the Listings within the framework of many other elements that I do not believe are mentioned in this Guide (and my apologies to the authors if I missed this discussion). See [...]for the current SSA listing of these factors, which continues through section 404.1568.

Finally, I did not note any guidelines for how evaluating physicians can do a full and accurate identification and analysis of the job activities and physical demands of the patient's job at the time of injury, which would seem to be an important element for evaluating a person's capacity for returning to work at their past work or for any other work for which they might qualify by the nature of their background and other elements referenced in [...] and elsewhere.

So, although I believe the publication would be a good starting point it does not quite take us to the point where its use can likely allow an evaluating physician to fully and accurately predict a person's capacity to work on a regular, sustained, and predictable basis.

Great Resource....

Really a good tool for RTW and Treatment Guides in addition to being a great help in addressing both of these issues with an MD provider in the Work Comp field. Very glad to have it.

Help the Buyer Decide
By George H. Sutherland
I have not read this book yet, so first, my apologies. My giving it five stars is due to the fact that I have to assign a value and to give it fewer than five stars may be unfair. Similarly, five stars may be unfair, but there is no way to not provide a number and my experience with the AMA Guides to Causation and the AMA Guides to Evaluation of Permanent Impairment has been almost wholly positive. Still, I apologize for doing what I was required to do without the necessary qualification.

The reason I am writing is that I would like to make a suggestion regarding future reviews. I expect that most purchasers of the book will be physicians; they are not looking for a good read but for a tool that helps them in their work. While I don't like putting down specific reviews (at least the reviewers provided something with a positive "review"), I don't see how I can express my opinion without doing so; I apologize to the reviewers if I seem to be heaping ridicule on them; my purpose is to suggest something more useful. Here, then, is my complaint.

Reviews of one word are not especially helpful. "Great", "i am so happy!" are not very descriptive of the book and don't provide reasons why a physician should purchase it. "Great Resource" at least describes the book as a resource, while "Great" might mean it was fun to read by the fireside. "Really a good tool for RTW and Treatment Guides in addition to being a great help in addressing both of these issues" sounds better but mostly restates the title of the book. To me, only the three star review by Phillip Bussey actually provided information about the book.

I think most buyers of this book belong to the same group of hyper-educated health care providers. Surely it is possible to tell potential buyers something about why the book is great, something about how it helps them in their practice. Please consider providing information along with the expletives. From reading the reviews, I have little idea about why I might or might not be able to use this book, and I would prefer not to sing for my supper without knowing that the supper has (or does not have) useful content.

Thanks for putting up with my whining. Please consider really helping a potential buyer when you go to the trouble of reviewing products obtained in such a convenient setting. I would like to know why I don't want to blow my money on something, or why I do. Calling it "Great" has not helped. Your mileage may vary. For what it's worth, I really hate being serious for five entire paragraphs.

The Record Has Been Set Straight on Relationships
By Joyce White
I really enjoyed reading You've Been Hoodwinked by James B-More Wharton. I felt he did an excellent job dispelling the myths about relationships. I especially liked the way the book was presented as a trial case. The way he broke down the definitions of boys vs men was on point. Every woman needs to read this book and get a better understanding of what God meant a relationship between a man and a woman should look like. I highly recommend everyone to buy a copy so you can see for yourself and also be enlightened. Looking forward to reading Part 2.

Wharton started with a good one. Can't wait to see how the trial ends for me.!!!
By Linda Bauer
This was truly a different read about relationships. A Bible based book that affirmed what is holy and sacred no matter your faith. He speaks to the everyday person from a view that reaches young and old alike. I can appreciate what was said about relationships and family when getting involved. He gives you much to consider about yourself and how you present yourself to others when seeking. I can't say all applied but it was all so interesting. He uses terminology that keeps it real for all walks of life...from the ballpark to the boardroom, it speaks volume to its reader.
