A fine tribute to Beverly Garland

Beverly Garland built a career on playing intelligent, strong-willed women--portrayals that mirrored qualities she possessed in real life. She has long deserved an in-depth biography and a detailed career study, so to find both in the same volume is a welcome delight. Having been close friends with Beverly for years, Deborah Del Vecchio garnered information, insights and personal material directly from her subject. The result is a worthy tribute to Garland, who was a gracious lady and talented actress. This book is a must-have item for her fans and also recommended to those interested in learning all about her life and her prolific output.

Thoroughly Entertaining and Informative!

For those of us who are fans of Miss Garland and her talent, this is a walk through memory lane, as well as strolling through areas that we never knew. For those of you who want to get to know this tough, classy lady and her work, this book is a must read. The author makes you feel welcome and and confident of her right to write this book. Most enjoyable for me was reading the stories told of her life in her own voice. Chock full of pictures, one gets to know Beverly not only in her television/movies career but also her personal life. Beverly Garland, Her Life and Career, is a real tribute to a woman who defied all odds and did it her way.

enjoyable book

I purchased this book as I remember Beverly on the many tv shows I watched during my youth.
This book gave a great picture of what she was like and covered her career well. At times though the chronology was off and some paragraphs were repeated. I also noted that the editor did not make a note about the error where it states that Beverly said Dick Powell was married to Ann Sothern. He was married to Joan Blondell. I do think it was worth the purchase. I am adding it to my collection of film/tv stars bios.

PreSchool-Grade 3-At the beginning of this imaginative picture book, a girl finds a fossil ("I found a stone/that once was bone"). The action then jumps back in time to trace the life, death, and fossilization of the flying reptile whose remains she has discovered. The rich, rhyming text flows smoothly, lyrically describing a typical day for the female pterosaur: "Strong bone,/skimming salty breeze,/scooping squid from teeming seas." Vibrant watercolors capture her power and graceful motion, while striking splashes of blues, greens, and yellows create vivid backgrounds of sky and sea. When the pterosaur dies, she sinks to the bottom of the ocean, "living days done./But millions of days are yet to come." The paintings depict how the creature's bones turn to fossils over time, while above, the earth's surface continues to change. The satisfying final spread shows the girl from the first page, now with her mother, and repeats the opening lines. An afterword fills in some of the details about pterosaurs and how fossils are formed. Ewart's inviting text and dramatic artwork work nicely together to describe the fossilization process in an engrossing way. There's a dreamy quality to Ewart's brief rhyme ("Weary bone, wing tips grazing wave and foam, gliding toward an island home . . .") that is echoed in her watercolors' flowing lines, graceful forms, and subdued hues. Closely based on current theories of pterosaur habitats and behavior, but low on violence, this gateway to the deep past makes engaging listening for emergent naturalists and younger dinophiles. This book starts out with a little girl who find a fossil. Then we are taken on a journey through her imagination of what the fossil is. She thinks that it belongs to a flying raptor. She imagines what it's day was like flying through the sky. The paintings show how after the creature dies it's bones turn to fossils over time.

This is a good picture book to introduce young kids to the concept of fossils.

I would recommend this book. It's the right length to keep the attention of kids of all ages.

For The Child Who Loves Dinosaurs

Interesting and educational, this was a hit with my five year old dinosaur lover. This is well written and beautifully illustrated, however, not necessarily for children who are younger than five. My three year old (soon to be four) did not understand the process of how this creature came to be a fossil. Still, this is one to have in your library for generations to come.

A Comprehensive Treatment of the Subject

This volume takes a scholarly approach to measuring and analyzing the role that colleges and univeristies play in economic development. In ten meaty chapters, the book considers the main topic along several dimensions. It gives balanced treatment to various sectors of higher education, from community colleges to research universities; it uses international comparisons to highlight similarities and differences among different political systems; and it considers the broad spectrum of economic-development functions of colleges and universities. This book is an excellent overview for those new to the topic, yet a rich scholarly resource for those who want to dig more deeply into specific aspects of it.
