About the Author
V. Kasturi "Kash" Rangan is the Malcolm P. McNair Professor of Marketing at Harvard Business School. He has taught the core first-year marketing course and was its head across multiple sections (1993-1996). He has also taught the second-year elective courses on Business-to-Business Marketing and Channels-to-Market, as well as the doctoral course on Research Design. He currently teaches marketing in the Advanced Management Program for senior executives. He also teaches in the focused executive programs: Channels-to-Market, Business Marketing Strategy, and Strategic Perspectives on Nonprofit Management.

Thoughtful book on channel strategy

I really enjoyed this book by Harvard Business School professor Kash Rangan. The authors advocate a disciplined approach to channel strategy that could generate superior returns in almost any industry. In my experience, most manufacturers neither develop careful channel maps nor do they assign executives senior enough to make significant channel resource commitments. As a result, the returns to channel stewardship should be available for any company willing to invest the time and effort.

A major strength of this book is the detailed examples provided in each chapter. Most business books simply provide very short case studies that always leave me wondering what really happened. Here, Rangan and Bell combine company stories with market data. Some of the examples are a bit dated, but that has the advantage of allowing the authors to describe the actual outcomes. The examples include both retail (B2C) and business-to-business channels, showing the strength of channels thinking. They even provide fresh insights into overdone examples such as Dell and Wal-Mart.

The only shortcoming is an over reliance on box-and-arrow diagrams. These are helpful when showing product and information flows within a channel system, but much less interesting when simply summarizing points made in the text.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with channel management responsibilities. This dense and challenging book will reward careful study.

Required Reading for a Channel Sales Manager

V. Kasturi Rangan presents a precise and exact step by step process to not only create a channel sales strategy, but to enhance and fix one that is already in place. Many companies and managers today feel all the have to do is sign up as many "channels" as possible to be successful. Unfortunately they overlook the overlook the critical principles of a success channel strategy and fail measurably, taking down the company, its people and alienating their customers. This is a must read and keep for any level of management involved in a go-to-market strategy.

Superrific

I said it once, I've said it again: Mal is a master of teenage, female angst. Which, I suppose is sorta strange when Mal happens to be a tall Korean-Canadian male. ;-) In this delightful graphic novel, Mal delves into his inner-femme and talks about the percarious bridge between youth and adulthood. His cutesy anime-esque style only serves to emphasize this transition. It's not quite messy, but it's not quite clean either. Fan-freaking-tastic.
Some people may not get the book merely because they haven't had similar experiences happen in their lives. Also, the narration occasionally makes a turn for melo-drama, in a soap-opera kind of way, and he tries occasionally to make things seem deeper than it may actually be (though, it could be argued that is how all teenage women treat events in their lives, thus the direction is waranted); but, the steady, consistent feel and interesting character interactions make up for it.
But, if you believe in first loves, unexpected friendships, and the realization it's OK to be scared, to be stupid, to make mistakes, to break away from childhood, to make peace with fate, and that everything will turn out well in the end... read this novel. Because, not only is it pretty, it's also true.

This Rhubarb Pie tastes oddly like Apple Pie.

So, the book is good, right? I don't know what else to say. I've been captivated by Mal's work for awhile now, (as evidenced in my own recent work.) so buying the book was simply a matter of having the money to do so. Second nature being held back by minor outside forces.
The story is interesting, and really does speak volumes about a generation of kids (ie ME) who grew up and found themselves just outside the world. Like it was just out of reach and if only we could gather the courage to leave the house more often, we could see it and experience it. And the only way we end up truly experiencing it and finding ourselves is if we are forced into it. And how we often hate the present we're in but look back on it with nostalgia, wishing we had it back. Not necessarily to do things differently, but just relive those feelings.
Plus Mal's characters all do these cute little manga-esque things and the book smells pretty good too.

a beautfiul voyage on the road of self-discovery

i first learned of "Lost at Sea" (and Bryan Lee O'Malley) by reading the Lost At Sea comic strips on the Oni Press webpage. after reading all of the web strips, i started visiting Mal's webpage and became an avid fan. thus, i had been waiting for this book to come out for close to two years.
its rare that i say something like this, but it was worth the wait.
i have read a LOT of graphic novels in the past few years, and the only one that moved me more than Lost at Sea was Craig Thompson's "Blankets." (Mr. Thompson, coincidentally, wrote the shining review on the back cover of Lost at Sea)
this book is both playful and mystifying. heartwarming and achingly sad. adorable and thought provoking.
the story really hit close to home for me as it reminded me very much of the relationship with my last girlfriend and many of the conversations we shared. Mal has obviously had his share of beautiful moments in relationships, because no one could write such honest and well-developed dialogue and soliloquy on these topics without having been put through it themselves.
of course, the story and the script isn't the only beauty of this graphic novel. Mal's art is superb. i don't think anyone else with any other style could have ever illustrated this story as effectively.
Mal's cartoony drawing style portrays an innocence and magical quality that is not only adequate for the themes explored, but is absolutely enchanting. the thick lines and heavy spaces reinforce the serious, unsteady nature of the lead character, raleigh. her struggle and insecurities are exemplified by mal's broad strokes and dynamic illustrations.
as i said, the book is thoroughly engaging and heart-touching.
it may only be a half-hour read. but it is one i intend to read at least once a month until august. probably longer.
thank you, Mal, for finally putting this together. now make another, please.

Too Much!

This is history by committee. There are 6 different authors listed for this book, and each of them should have just written a text about their own area of expertise. The text is dry, droning on and on, yet somehow not really getting to any point. I suppose it just lacks a voice or a focus.
It doesn't help that the publisher has crammed in so much to a relatively small trade paperback book by using a small font (about a 10 or an 8). They've also used a light ink on a semi-gloss paper which makes reading uncomfortable. Yes there are full color illustrations and maps throughout, but frankly, I would rather have a text that's more engaging and easily read.

Great informative book

I bought this book as part of my assigned readings. I was taking a HIST 157 online course.

As a non citizen I had so much to learn. This book was so well laid out, chronologically detailing the young but packed history of America since 1865.

It was a very interesting book and would recommend it to anyone, taking a class or just furthering their own understanding of American history.

I had to purchase this book for a college course that I was enrolled in. The book is very informative, but unlike some of the textbooks I have bought in the past, this book is easy to red and is in language that I can understand. The book is at my level.

You Are Chosen To Be a Good Soldier for Christ

That is what I would rename this book if it gets revised or republished. It is so much more that its title implies. Other than that, it is the best book I have read on walking in authority and victory as a good soldier of Christ and dealing with the weapons of our warfare. This is the third book I have read from Bob Larson. I think it is the best of what I have read. I have watched his videos through the years. But, they didn't prepare me for what an excellent teacher and author he was. His writing is practical, bible based and authentic. If your a Christian, you have been drafted....he gives the tactical strategies of a defeated enemy and our job to clean up and reclaim what was won for us on Calvary. Christians have been bullied for far too long, we need to partner with Jesus Christ to take the Kingdom of God. I recommend this book along with his Curse Breaking book to launch you into your call to military service for the Lord. Fight the good fight of faith!

This book is excellent and not as "demon" related as the title might indicate. The teachings are sound Biblical teachings for practical Christian living and praying. The Bible citations are great foundations for his teachings.
