Corsets/Tight-Lacing Only

I bought the book because the photo and main title captured my attention. But make no mistake, this book has nothing to do with waist cinchers of the latex variety and focuses solely on corsets and there's a huge difference. The smaller print in the title is what the book is all about but the picture looks more like a latex waist cincher as opposed to a corset. Whether or not this was done intentionally in order to capture the attention of those into waist clinchers (like myself) which is a huge trend as of late, albeit a very old practiced tradition like that of tight-lacing but the waist cincher craze is at all-time high so it could've been intentionally done for profit, who knows.

If you're into corsets and the art of tight-lacing, then you will find this book helpful and informative I'm sure.

If you're into waist cinchers to reduce your middle, skip it because it contains no information on this topic and you probably won't find it helpful. I didn't. Think it should've been titled Tight-Lacing 101 or the Art of Wearing Corsets to slim your waistline or something like that in order to accurately reach its audience..

The first part of this book deals with Shostakovich and his incorporation of traditional Jewish elements in his music. In recent times there has been a great deal of controversy concerning Shostakovich's "dissident" outlook and his critical attitude towards the Soviet regime. The contributors to this volume, however, have chosen to focus on the more humane qualities of Shostakovich's personality, his honesty and courage, which enabled him in difficult times to express through his works Jewish torment and suffering under both the Soviet and Nazi regimes. The second part of this book is dedicated to the music of Daniel Asia and to his philosophical and religious identification with Judaism. Of particular importance is the composer's opening article, a valuable testament to the religious and aesthetic beliefs that inspired him to create his most significant symphonic work, the Fifth Symphony, Of Songs and Psalms.

About the Author
Born in Kiev, Ukraine, pianist and conductor Alexander Tentser immigrated to the United States in 1990, right before the collapse of the Soviet Union. Educated at the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music, he also holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he lives with his wife Anna, a violinist and his chamber music partner, and with their two very musical cats. Dr Tentser teaches various music courses and directs the Pima Community College Orchestra.

Vespasian's adventures

This is volume 6 of Vespasian’s fictionalised adventures. As the author mentions in his historical note, we know virtually nothing about Vespasian for about a decade following his return from Britannia. Rather than assume that he retired to his estates at the end of his two-month period as a consul, Fabbri has chosen to keep him deeply involved and at the centre of the political machinations and struggles for the succession of Emperor Claudius. The other obvious advantage and merit of such a choice is to allow the author to describe and portray Rome’s often tense relations with the Parthian Empire and its rivalry and competition over who would control the strategic highlands of Armenia.

This choice is, of course, part of an author license when writing a piece of historical fiction. It makes for a more interesting story and it is also something that Fabbri has done in some of his previous volumes dealing with Vespasian’s earlier years, and done quite successfully. Making this choice does however also mean running a bit of a risk by making the hero a bit too central or having him go through adventures and ordeals which he survives rather miraculously. The main example here is the hero’s “enforced stay” as a hostage of a satellite King who is vassal to the Parthian monarch and his somewhat implausible escape and return to Rome. Also a bit hard to believe, although just about possible, is the somewhat Machiavellian plot to provoke a Parthian-Roman war, although I will not mention anything more with regards to this in order to avoid spoilers.

The pieces I happened to prefer where those related to the power struggle surrounding Claudius’ last years. Here again, the author has make a number of choices, one of which being to depict the ageing Emperor as completely inadequate, and a drunkard in addition. Whether he really was so incapable is debatable but, again, this is the author’s choice. It is a rather plausible one given the grievous political mistakes that he made, mistakes that the author clearly show as being tantamount to suicide.

Another key feature and quality of this book is the depiction of characters and the description of the behaviours adopted by some of the historical protagonists. Two in particular – the overambitious and power hungry Agrippina (grand-daughter of Germanicus) and the cruel and unpleasant comedian Nero, her “darling” and rather unbalanced son, are particularly lurid. Nero’s reign started auspiciously and the new and young Princeps was rather popular to begin with. There was little, if anything, allowing anyone to predict how and to what extent it would degenerate and Vespasian would have been very unlikely to be in any position to “predict” this, although the outcome of the succession and Britannicus’ (the legitimate heir to Claudius and his son) rather limited future under the new regime was probably more obvious and are very vividly described.

There are also a few little glitches, such as the assignment of five cohorts of auxiliary infantry, all of which being eight hundred strong. This number does not correspond to a cohort’s size, not even a double sized one (the theoretical number would be more likely to be 960). Also, there were relatively few double sized auxiliary cohorts across the Empire and I have never heard of five of them being bunched together within the same province.

Having mentioned all this, you could start believed that I had mixed views about this book. This would be far from the truth because it is a rather superb and exciting read. For me, it turned out to be one of these books which I was simply unable to put down once I got started. Four strong stars.

and enjoyed the first three tremendously

I have read all the books in this series, and enjoyed the first three tremendously. I felt the fourth book, although readable had been written to meet a deadline, and the fifth book in the series I did not enjoy too much. It was really 2 different stories, with the Druids as the common thread.
In this new book, however, Mr. fabbri is back to his very best. A cracking read which I really enjoyed. I now look forward to more books in this series and to Vespasian's continued rise through the social strata of Rome. Students of a Rome will know how far he actually got, so roll on the ultimate promotion!

Worst Book In Series - No Historical Basis for The Story Line Presented.

I was annoyed that I had to answer some set questions before I could write my own opinion. Let me say first of this review if based on an Audio edition of the book. Peter Kenny does his usual superb job with the narration and creating the voices for the various characters. I certainly give the narration and A. The book was available on Audible UK and I got it when I was in the UK on a trip.

My complaint with this book - the worse of the series, is that the author had to make up most of it and it reads like a cheap Hollywood Script.

The period covered in this book are a period in which the historian Suetonius, states that Vespasian retired to his estates outside of town to avoid the wrath of Agrippina. Instead of sticking to the facts, Fabbri decided to concoct some fictitious nonsense about Vespasian being help captive by the Parthians for 2 years and miraculously escapes with the help of Magnus and his Slave Hormus. It just really was not even remotely plausible if anyone knows anything about the relations between Rome and Parthia.

This book turned a great series into a Grade D Hollywood script. The first part which takes place in Rome was OK, but it went downhill so fast into a cheap Hollywood sword and sandals script. I am sure if the author wanted to be viewed as a credible writer, he should have stuck to the facts. Vespasian was in retirement and he could have told the story of events in Rome and the death of Claudius instead of making up a bunch of tripe about Vespasian being captured by the Parthians.

This book is simply NOT worth reading. The early books in the series are good, but this book demonstrated that Fabbri does not know how to deal with the history of the period. I wonder what sort of mess he will create when he gets to the year of the 4 Emperors.

My choice of PfMP Exam Prep...

In preparation for taking the PfMP exam I tried pretty much everything out there regarding books, tools, etc... and found this one to be the one I used the most. My total prep time for this exam was only around 2-3 weeks - the combination of the online mock tests, material included in the book itself, and additional memory aides were a big factor in preparation for this exam(and passing) in the short time I had allotted. If I could only buy one, I would buy this one...

the book provided some useful consulting frameworks that made portfolio management easier to understand

I started reviewing this book and I agree with most the reviews, both positive and negative. On the positive, the book is well organized with a heavy emphasis on exam preparation and strategy. On the content for the knowledge area, I thought the overview of portfolio management and the unique perspective of the author is refreshing. He simplified a complex discipline into a set of important questions for each of the knowledge areas. This was especially helpful for me as I did not necessarily have experiences in all the domain areas. The key questions were innovative and helpful. Also, the book provided some useful consulting frameworks that made portfolio management easier to understand.

I also agree with some of them the negative comments, but I thought the one star was too critical as most were a matter of preference. Specifically, I thought it was convenient to repeat the question in the answer key, so I did not have to flip back and forth. The explanation in the answer key was suitable since that's the main book anyway (and the author said that much in the intro and on the back cover). There were many graphs and tables, but it's a b/w book (wonder if its color on Kindle). The materials was quite boring and dry, but that's the nature of the topic. I think the biggest negative in the book is a lack of alignment with the ECO. (I emailed the author and Wu mentioned that the ECO is used in their bootcamp and the changes may make it to the book. I also learned that they just receive PMI's REP certification. I may join their bootcamp.)

Most importantly, as I compare this book with the others, it is comparably less expensive with considerably more content and frameworks and practice questions. I hope the author will make improvements based on some of the suggestions here, but I also think it's the best on the market and it deserves 5 stars for using an innovative format.

Informative and practical, plus a fun read

As co-owner of a small business I read "Secrets of Computer Espionage" with interest, particularly since I thought that running a firewall and virus protection made my system fairly safe from intrusion. Hardly.
Consider the book required reading if you run any flavor of Microsoft Windows and need to keep private information private, and especially if your computers support external data connections (read: internet or external access).
McNamara covers a wide range of possible computer attacks from the mundane to the geeky-obscure. And he discusses the reasonable likelihood of each different type of attack along with how to identify and defend against them.
He also keeps the book common-sense, such as don't invest tens of thousands of dollars in attack-hardened hardware and software if you leave your building unlocked. He talks about physical access restrictions, company security policies, and other considerations regarding the ultimate goal of keeping the contents of your computer system safe - points that some computer security books overlook.
Finally, I love that McNamara injects humor, a conversational tone and many case studies into his book. It turns a potentially dry topic into an enjoyable read.

A side of computer security seldom seen

Warning: This book will make you paranoid.
It shows you just what kind of problems you face in securing your computers and life in the current legal climate. it shows just what can be done to you legally without papers being served on you. The current laws concerning wiretaping and gathering of evidence. How black bag operations are planned and committed. How your systems can be monitored in many many ways.
The book is current as of 2003 and includes information on the oxymoronically named "Patriot Act", as well as CALEA and other laws that remove your privacy from people with guns and an excuse.
And then there are the illegal ways.
The book does into a level of depth that the current law enforcement community would not want you to know. And you do want to know, even if you don't have anything to hide. (And everyone does have things to protect. Your reputation, your credit information, where you keep your money, not to mention those things that may be unpopular with someone somewhere.)
Well worth getting if you have any interest in security, computers or otherwise.

A Good Coming Out/Coming of Age Story

Even though I would classify this as a Young Adult book, I think the feelings Kieran & Drew experience could benefit an older audience as well. Take the emotions out of the high school setting and I think anybody in a similar situation could relate.

The story is told through alternating the POV between Kieran & Drew though to me it seemed there was more Kieran. I liked the realness and natural progression of how their relationship developed. I also really like Matt, Drew's teammate and best friend, because he was supportive, but spoke his mind about feeling hurt and wasn't afraid to tell him off for being a jerk either. There were a few times where Kieran & Drew's HEA was in limbo, but by the end both boys realized what they wanted for their future.

Gem of A Story

This is a beautiful gem of a story about two high school boys, Kieran and Drew, who are coming to terms with their sexuality and finding strength in each other. They both have troubled homes, Drew especially struggles as the head of household to his agoraphobic mother, but they find each other when they most need it and find that they're soul mates. Kieran has loved the handsome, athletic Drew from afar for years now, but Drew just recently noticed the quirky, unassuming Kieran. Perhaps they're initially drawn together simply because they're both gay, but they find that they have everything in common and perfectly complement one another.

This book just continues along at a bit of a mellow pace, with a few blips here and there of conflict. But this is really a story of two boys who are coming out and falling in love and finding themselves at a time in life where nothing makes sense and so many decisions need to be made.

I'm a huge fan of L.A. Gilbert and loved her book The Coil. While this was a change of pace from that book, I loved it as well. It shows her versatility as an author and her ability to write beautiful stories, no matter the theme. Highly recommended.

A beautiful coming out story

The characters made this book a wonderful read. Keiran was so lonely and painfully isolated at school, ridiculed and viewed as a 'freak' because he was different to his peers. Drew, outwardly the popular baseball player, was dealing with the pressures of having to look after his agoraphobic mother. Both boys are finishing high school and planning their next steps. Drew is trapped in his home town, not able to leave his mother. Keiran, on the other hand, can't wait to escape and has plans to move as far away as possible.

Keiran and Drew commence a relationship which culminates in having to make decisions about their future. The story is slightly predictable, as Drew hides his sexuality and Keiran experiences problems with his father, but so well written.

I liked the slow build up of the sexual aspects of the relationship. Aged 18, Keiran is desperate for a physical relationship "If the small-town lifestyle wasn't enough to make him want to leave, then a desperate urge to have actual sex with another human being was." However, the sex between Keiran and Drew is entwined with the emotion, as they both slowly start to explore the physical side of their relationship. 4.5 stars
