An Easy Read

The subject matter was good and deserved rather more in depth exploration of the characters involved. I found the change in Sel from being violent to non-violent too quick to be realistic. Rather like a story that I would read in a Womans magazine - a bit Mills and Boonish. Would suit a person who really liked light reading material. Good attempt for a first novel.

Circles Don't Have To Stay Round and Round and Round

Althea Barr's "Breaking the Circle" demonstrates through believable action, situations and characters that with compassion - faith in action - the heartbreaking cycle of domestic violence and abuse can be broken. Don't expect to find didactic teaching in this spellbinding book. Do expect to find an invisible thread of faith and hope, echoed perhaps best in the Bible verse, "ALL things work together...to good." All things working together include both good and bad - and foolish lifestyle choices with their resulting consequences. "Breaking the Circle" is also a sweet romance that proves that the beauty queen/cheerleader does not always live a charmed life or win the heart of the prince. For slightly overweight Emily, a teacher, has a heart of love that attracts love. She not only notices the bruises on one of her pupils, she has the courage to become involved and confront Robert's mother and stepfather, Mihi and Sel. They confess that, having been relentlessly abused themselves as children, it's the only way they know how to treat Robert. On the surface, Emily's involvement portends disaster: Robert and Sel, are shipwrecked. Sel saves Robert's life, but no one believes that and he is jailed on assault and child abuse charges. Mihi overdoses on alcohol and drugs and loses the baby she is carrying. But add hope into this tragic mix and stir it with a dose of compassion for a climax as satisfying as chocolate! For during their perilous hours lost at sea, Robert and Sel develop a love and respect for each other that keeps them together through every new trial. With encouragement from Island Annie, they transfer the anger smoldering inside them from the domestic abuse they've suffered into blocks of wood and burn them. The invisible thread of faith in "Breaking the Circle" draws the characters toward a rewarding future and rewards the reader with the realization that a heart of love can help dismantle the circle of domestic violence and transform it into a new shape.
